It Must be Marching Season

Why is it not repeatedly brought up that there are in the manner of thousands  of parades a year? I don't get that.

Quote from: imtommygunn on September 28, 2026, 09:10:34 AMIt's the residents should be calling out the cops for resignations. They can't not beat race rioters and flag protestors of the road and start doing it now. What do the orange order expect.

Agreed on all of that gallsman. This whole thing is just bigotry and the DUP probably doing a bit of opportunism now.

Bryson is in it for himself. His alliance here will blow up at some point. How this guy gets such a platform and s beyond me.
Whoever in the police was reporting to the PC that all would be grand for the parade to go ahead needs to resign.

Thank god whoever was calling the shots didn't send the cops in to try and beat innocent people off the street.

The police didn't report that everything would be grand all they stated was that they didn't expect there to be violence. A perspective that has proven to be correct.

I'd say that was more down to luck than anything. Would have taken very, very little to spark something off. Plus (if true), why the need for extra resources if they didn't expect any violence?

Because they have been caught with their pants down before. Except the best but prepare for the worst.

In the JR Denise Kielly KC took great issue with the information provided. The Court of Appeal and the subsequent JR seems to have suggested that it wasn't an unreasonable position to adopt.

To clarify I am not defending it. I don't know what it was but I don't think it's as simple as they must have known hence the plans in place.

As said here earlier the DUP have got their siege mentality vote back from this and it's a perfect distraction from the Robinson disgrace.

Meanwhile the rest of the world (we just probably Ireland and the UK) looks and shrugs its shoulders at the stupidity of the situation.

She tried, kept quiet when the DUP were at their work in various departments but there was no reciprocation whatsoever from Unionism and with this she very much needed to stand strong with the people on the Garvaghy Road and show the SF voting base that they were no longer patsies.

Stay in Stormont and go after Givan and Co for every single move they make that isn't justifiable by their own policies and procedures.

I dont have much truck with SF or MON but she was superb over the weekend. Fair play. It was good to see so many politicians coming together. Questions to be asked of those who werent there
Just Alliance was it? Other parties all on the ground from what I saw

Yeah

Alliance say the right things and know who is in the right on this occasion and in fairness they were very anti parade right from the go however that's their problem. If Tennyson was so against the parade then he should have been there on the ground talking to the residents but he couldn't be seen to be taking a side. Fence sitting serves you well when all is good and there are no problems or crisis etc but when the shit hits the fan it just looks weak. If there is an assembly election next yr (unlikely) then I would fully expect him to lose his seat to SF2 or SDLP

Quote from: GTP on September 28, 2026, 09:47:44 AMThe only long term benefit that I can see for unionism is that they can use this as an example of how reconciliation within N Ireland has not been achieved and therefore there cannot be a border pole. Whilst reconciliation is not mentioned in the GFA it does get mentioned every so often by people who should know better as being a condition for a border poll and unification.
That reconciliation is mentioned as a prerequisite is perhaps the greatest incentive for any unionist to ensure it does not happen.

Could it not be argued that as long as NI exists we cannot have reconciliation, only in  a united/new Ireland will it be possible.
You could spin it that the OO aren't being treated equally by the British state so should join a free Ireland where they can march anywhere they want. But it feels like another grandstanding performance to show how put upon they are as a minority in their own country and that it would definitely be worse in a united Ireland.
I wonder do any of the 35 members of the OO ever take a walk up the Garvaghy Road when not in uniform.

You could look at it  this way. Stormont have been begging Westminster for more  money . No doubt the  bill  for this will be in the millions.  How does that help unionists cause to remain in  the precious union?

When will the penny drop for the British  government and the ordinary British people... We're handing out more  and more money to you , and this is what  you're spending it on?!

Again, that is up to Nationalists to push that position in every interview, particularly when speaking to English audiences. Maybe SF/SDLP should take an ad out on the front page of a few British newspapers with that headline.

Is there now a technical position that the permission from the PC was to go down the road on 27 Sep and now that that day has been and gone, any attempt to go down the road now needs a new application and determination ?

Bryson has said that as far as he is concerned because they didn't get marching down the road yesterday, the application is still valid and there doesn't need to be a new one.

Is there much of a gathering on the Garvaghy Road today?

QuoteIf a parade is blocked, police and organizers can adjust the timing within that calendar day to get the march completed before midnight. But as a matter of administrative law, it cannot bleed into the next day—at 00:00, the legal authority granted by the Parades Commission determination lapses, and any step taken past midnight forms a new, unnotified procession.

there has been an ask for people to come out on to the road. Not sure what is happening

Apparently the OO tried to march  towards the G road at  4am this morning.

They would have got away  with it too if it hadn't have been for those pesky police land rovers  in the way

QuoteA solicitor for Garvaghy Road residents has said the Orange Order must now apply for a new Drumcree parade after thousands of nationalists blocked their route on Sunday.

Darragh Mackin, of Phoenix Law, said the Orange Order will have to submit a fresh application as the clock on the original notification has run down.

"This isn't just us saying this, they said it to the Court of Appeal on Saturday night," he said.

"The determinations are time-specific, and therefore when they lapse you must reapply.

"Whilst they can allow for a margin of appreciation to cater for the unprecedented events, it does not result in the time-limited determination extending it indefinitely.

"For the very same reasons the Orange Order's lawyers argued on Saturday night, the game is now up, a fresh application must be made."

"What's good for the goose is good for the gander."

However, loyalist activist Jamie Bryson said the Orange Order still has a legal right to march the Garvaghy Road.

"And that is the PSNI's position as well," he said.

"I spoke to the PSNI and their position is that they have turned back the parade so as a matter of law the parade formed up at 8am on Saturday morning and essentially as a matter of law has been marching on the spot since at the direction of the PSNI," he said.

"The only way by which that determination can be set aside is if the PSNI refer to the Secretary of State or if the Secretary of State intervenes of its own volition to set it aside," he told the BBC.

There was a heavy police presence in the Portadown area after the Parades Commission gave the controversial parade the go-ahead last week.

As part of its controversial determination, the commission gave permission for 35 Orange Order members to walk silently along the length of the route through the nationalist district.

The parade was ordered to begin at 8am and end by 9.30am on

An application by residents to hold a protest involving 5,000 people had earlier been withdrawn as court proceedings played out.

In total, three different court sittings, including one by the Court of Appeal, were held on Saturday and early Sunday.

By daybreak on Sunday, thousands of people gathered at strategic points along the route through the nationalist district, meaning the Orange march could not proceed.

Protesters dispersed at around midnight after being told that a fresh process to address the dispute was being initiated

A new application needed it would seem. Jamie Bryson v Darragh Mackin....who wins that fight?

That is clearly what they mean. There was a policing plan in place that thankfully avoided, as far as I can tell, any violence, threat of violence or injury. This should be the foremost objective of any operation, so you could easily argue they both planned and executed it exceptionally, especially in light of the rising temperatures on both sides.

What they want is heads on a stake for not forcing the march through. Forget about disorder or baton charges or plastic bullets or hospital visits. That's all irrelevant to these fucks as long as they get to walk their banner down the road.

Nail hit square on the head.
The number of them talking about PSNI  using water cannon, plastic bullets, whatever they have to, to clear the road.

So many if them still living in the past.
The days of a " protestant parliament for a protestant people " are long gone.

In days gone by the RUC and B specials would have waded in and cleared the road.

Many on the loyalist side cannot fathom that those days are gone.

If MON said she went to  a GAA match , unionists would say  similar . You'll never win against that  bigoted lot

The nationalist leaders HAD  to be there. Yes , it'll probably help them in the polls , but  it wouldn't be as easy  for the RUC to baton the  heads off elected politicians  than it would for nameless Garvaghy residents

Thinking it over now , this was a unionist plan to  win back votes , not only to win Stormont seats , but to fend off  a border poll. They know it's coming even if they keep  saying it's not. FFS sure they  mention it more than SF/SDLP do

100% correct. In all honestly the notion that the actions of the Garvaghy Road residents have put a United Ireland back by x number of years are laughable.
Those loyalists/unionists supporting the bowler hats wont ever be voting for a UI.
Those commentators in the south spouting similar nonsense are the same partitionists we've all known about for years.

100%. Any other course of action from any nationalist party would have been wrong.

What happens now? Blackheart seems to be threatening to get her buddies that were in Scarva out.

1. In the past when the nationalist's havent been battered off the streets by the police and the OO havent got their way, it usually ends with Loyalist rioting and violence and some poor Catholic getting hurt or killed, that's the sad truth.

2. In the short term the call for prosecution of MON and residents

3.Call for resignation of police for not battering the residents.

4. Call for resignation of MON as first minister.

5. Call for Penguinelly to resign as deputy.

6. Call for collapse of assembly and blame Sinn Fein/SDLP/Alliance.

Pricks are still trying to march. This will drag on yet...

I would love to know whether the OO in Portadown actually really believed they could get walking down that road?  Setting aside legal wrangling and in theory what they are permitted under law, did they really think in practice it would happen? Did they not understand that there would be people blocking the road and there was not a hope in hell of police physically removing them. If they thought they could actually carry it off they are incredibly stupid. If they didn't really believe it would happen, then it's all just a game to them and showmanship.
That's just, like your opinion man.
