What an overblown exageration, this goal is just another good goal, nothing more.

Ronnie Whelan V The Soviet Union in 1988 was far better

Ronnies was so far up his shin it'd almost qualify as kneeing the ball :D

Great days

Always loved this one - Shevchenko, struck while running towards the sideline (a la Pat Spillane  ;))

The key to success is to be consistently competitive -- if you bang on the door often it will open

Rooney's Goal was better than Van Bastens second one, and probably Rivaldos. Not close to the others.

No way was it better than Rivaldo's (the one most people would mean is the one at the end of the video, not the one against United) which came in the final minutes against Valenica to complete an unreal hat-trick, securing Barca Champion's League Football at Valencia's expense.

Definitely a better goal, the ball was struck further out, a longer distance from where it came, by a midfielder in an international competition
DRIVE THAT BALL ON!!

The wonderful Gerry Ryan scored possibly the best overhead goal ever in a 3-1 friendly defeat to West Germany in May 79 at Landsdown Road. Ryan played with Bohs, Derby Co. and Brighton and Hove Albion. Of course that was back when football still had a soul and Germany was still divided. Not that there is any connection there.

Best so far this season that I can think of.

Brilliant goal on Sunday, but 1 against Newcastle was better in terms of technique. Goal at weekend sat up lovely for Rooney at weekend with slight deflection on cross so he had a bit of time to get in position for shot.

I would put Mattie Burrows goal ahead of it.

Volleys, overheads etc are great but it is hard to beat a free flowing move followed by a great finish.

John Aldridge's 2nd goal v Forest in Fa Cup semi final in 1988 was on at the weekend somewhere, forgot how good that was.

Also Bobby Charlton scored 1 in Charity Shield (1963?, when Pat Jennings scored also) was a briiliant goal from 1 end of the field to another.

Pat, city fan?
Na, not a fan of any premiership side. A quality goal yeah, but should never be mentioned as 'the best ever'. Perhaps I was a little sharp in saying it wouldn't be my choice for goal of the season, because as someone said it could be a crucial one come the end of the season.

If it was scored by Darren Bent there would be less talk about it.  Was a very good goal but SKY going on as if it is best goal ever is crazy.

The goal was an excellent stirke but it is being overhyped a bit. I think its due to how crucial the goal was - to win a big derby game and get the title challenge back on track. Add in the indifferent form of Rooney and the autumn shenanigans and its a big story hence SKY overdose of hype.

It was some goal though all the same. I think if Darren Bent scored as good a goal (very possible) that meant as much (not likely) there would be loads of hype about it. Probably not as much granted.

Tony Yeboah v Wimbledon

I was just going to mention this one, unbelievable goal and just about better than the volley against Liverpool.

Hughes used to be the man for the overheads or bicycle kicks, I remember when I was younger everbody was trying to copy him, and I loved his goal in the 93 Charity Shield final v Arsenal.  Le Tissier has some that could be in this category aswell.

As for people saying he shinned it, nobody can say for definite if he did or not as there is a shot which show it possibly hitting his shin and another showing it hitting his foot.  Either way, it doesn't take away from the greatnes of the goal plus the fact that it was the winner in the Derby on top of that.

It looks like a shinner (and actually well down his shin) but it shouldn't really have flown in like that if it was I'd have thought. Must have caught it just perfect.
