I see the fixtures for this years MacRory cup have been put on the Ulster Colleges website.  Two tough groups with interesting opening games.  Omagh/Magherafelt and Colmans/Armagh look to be two clinkers.  Good to see Lurgan stepping up and giving it a go.  Should be an interesting competition.

Is it just me or is the competition starting very early and finishing well before Christmas?  I always thought that the MacRory didn't start until after Halloween.

academy would have to be favourites for this.

On the basis of Omagh winning the Rannafast and having quite a few players back from last year, I'd say that they are in prime position.

Games used to start first saturday in November.

how many of these will be playing macrory in 2010/2011?

14. John McCullagh – An Caisleán Glas
15. Ronan Ó Néill -An Omaigh
22. Cahir McCullagh – An Caisleán Glas

These lads will be available but playing will be dependent on the choice of the 2010-11 management team of Kieran Donnelly and Finnian Moriarty.

I think there were seven or eight of the present Tyrone minor team who are/were students at Omagh CBS - thats some representation.  What has happened to last years management team?

Dungannon have Shea McGarrity, Eunan Deeney, Harry Og Conlon, Ryan Devlin, Liam Gervin and Kiefer Morgan all Tyrone minors this year still available.  (If not more- I think I've missed another couple). Will take some stopping.

Colaisti Inis Eoghain Launched

A new era in Inishowen schools football will begin when Coláistí Inis Eoghain play their first match in the Ranafast Cup in Ulster Colleges football against St Michael's of Enniskillen in Burt on Friday afternoon 17th September (throw-in 3.15pm).

Established under the auspices of the Inishowen GAA Board and the five local secondary schools – Scoil Mhuire Buncrana, Crana College Buncrana, Carndonagh Community School, Moville Community College and Colaiste Chineál Eoghain Buncranncha – Coláistí Inis Eoghain will play in the Rannafast Cup, the Division 1 competition for boys aged under 16 and a half. Later in the year a second team will participate in the under 14 and a half, Corn na nÓg Cup which gets under way at the start of November.

Managed by Donegal's 2006 Ulster minor championship winning manager Sean Clerkin, the Rannafast Cup team, with a squad of twenty four have been training since the middle of July and all are itching for the throw in. Monaghan native Clerkin, who is assisted by Sean Noonan from Buncrana, Robert Farren from the Malin club and Laurence Hegarty also from Buncrana, told the squad at an official launch night in Carndonagh GAA club, that the opportunity to play in Ulster Colleges football, against some of the top schools in the Province will help them prepare to make the breakthrough into Donegal squads at U16, minor, U21 and ultimately senior level.

Trials are ongoing for the Corn na nÓg squad, which has over forty players competing for places on a side that will be managed by Moville Community College teacher Sean O'Hare, an Armagh native who knows a bit about the level of competition they can expect to meet, and he will be assisted by Jimmy Hegarty from Moville, Damian Dowds of Burt and Michael McMenamin from Muff.

"This high level of competition will present young Inishowen players with a great opportunity to build on the coaching they have received at primary schools, which has been ongoing in the area since 2004 and the success they have enjoyed at club level in recent years," Inishowen GAA Board Chairman Gerard Callaghan said at the official launch, where Gerry Doherty, from main sponsors SuperValu Carndonagh, presented two new kits to the teams.

"Everyone is thrilled at the huge investment Supervalu Carndonagh have given to the initiative, especially in this difficult economic climate" Callaghan continued. "Our thanks go to Gerry Doherty and we hope Supervalu Carndonagh will get good value from their association with Coláistí Inis Eoghain in the weeks and months ahead."

Mr Callaghan also thanked Liam Grimley of Healthwise Pharmacies Buncrana and Moville for sponsoring two superb medical kits, which will be of great benefit to the players and their mentors during games and training.

The Rannafast Cup starts with a match against St Michael's Enniskillen who have kindly agreed to travel to Burt for the opening game, and they will then play St Eunan's College on Tuesday 28th September (Venue TBC), followed by the visit to The Scarvey Buncrana, on Thursday 30th September, of defending champions Omagh CBS, who are managed by former Tyrone star Ciaran McBride. Everyone at Colaisti Inis Eoghain are thrilled that Omagh too have agreed to play the game at an Inishowen venue under lights, which should attract a bumper crowd to the Inishowen venue.

The final game in the group for the newcomers will be against St Pats Keady from Armagh at the beginning of October. Following the group stages the top two teams will qualify from Group A, for the knock out stages, which continue into November with the final scheduled for Saturday 13th November.

The Corn na nÓg, meanwhile starts in November with the first game against the mighty St Pats Maghera in the week commencing Monday 8th November followed by games against St Mary's Magherafelt, St Pats Armagh and finishing off with a derby game against St Eunans Letterkenny.

Colaisti Inis Eoghain were further boosted in the run up to their opening game, when it was announced that the Inishowen GAA Board were successful in their recent application for a Texaco Sports Bursary, which will help to fund the joint venture between the five secondary school and the seven clubs in the peninsula. The award will be presented at a function in Dublin at the end of September.

Triggerhappy

MacRory cup underway once again.
No luck to Lurgan!!!

BT MacRory Cup : St Macartan's Monaghan 2-12 St Michael's Lurgan 2-11.

So near, yet so far for debutants St Michael's Lurgan in the BT MacRory Cup yesterday.

A goal from Feargal Moore 5 minutes from time put them 2-11 to 1-11 ahead. But Ryan McGuigan pointed a free and, as injury time beckoned, floated a 45 into the Lurgan goal area from where sub Keelin Clerkin punched a goal for a single point victory, 2-12 to 2-11.

This was an excellent opening game for the competition, Conleth McAlinden shooting a first half goal to put Lurgan in at the break 1-5 to 0-7 ahead.

Shane Carey's goal edged Monaghan ahead early in the second half, but 4 points from Conor Lavery tied the game before the late drama left Lurgan wondering what might have been.

Monaghan will face St Patrick's Cavan in the middle of next week, while Lurgan will try their luck against Omagh CBS before the Halloween break.

Meanwhile there was a shock in the BT Casement Cup hurling quarter-finals when St Patrick's Academy produced a superb second half to knock out holders St Patrick's Armagh 0-20 to 3-9.

Last season's beaten finalists St Killian's Garron Tower though were comfortable winners over St Colman's Newry.

St Macartan's : Shane Carey 1-0, Keelin Clerkin 1-0, Ryan McGuigan 0-5, Sean McKenna 0-3, Christopher McKenna 0-2, Liam Hahassey 0-1, Fergal McGeough 0-1.

St Michael's Lurgan : Conleth McAlinden 1-0, Fergal Moore 1-0, Conor Lavery 0-5, Ciaran Conway 0-2, Niall Patterson 0-2, Andrew Nugent 0-1, Gavin McCormick 0-1.
