QuoteThis is a non-story really. 50 crackpots want to burn books and it is worldwide news? Only if the news agenda is to incite hatred and encourage war.

My thoughts exactly

Can't believe the amount of coverage this got in the Irish media, RTE in particular.

This is a bizarre story. A group of 50 nutters want to burn the Koran and the whole world needs to know about it? Just as bizarre was Today FMs news report which stated "A Taliban spokesman has condemned the burning....". Every church leader in the US and most politicans condemned the burning which is surely of more interest than what some un-named hardline Muslim in the Taliban has to say on the matter.

Its easy to say that its only "50 nutters" but I'd wager that they have the silent support of many imbeciles.

They don't need to...the few radicals just build victory Mosques instead!

It must be true, sure they have a web site and all. Why would go to the trouble of creating a site, administrating it etc.... just to push your own agenda? Surely thats what sports discussion forums are for ;)

Is this Jim Corr's site?

"The U.S. Embassy in London said Washington is "deeply concerned about all deliberate attempts to offend members of any religious or ethnic group" and condemned such acts as "unrepresentative of American values." While the embassy said it believes firmly in freedom of religion and freedom of expression, "we reaffirm our position that the deliberate destruction of any holy book is an abhorrent act."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the Quran burning would be a "disrespectful, disgraceful act."

Former Republican vice presidential candidate and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin urged Jones on Wednesday to halt his plans, saying the burning "will feed the fire of caustic rhetoric and appear as nothing more than mean-spirited religious intolerance. Don't feed that fire."

The U.S. Embassy in Pakistan condemned it as "disrespectful, intolerant and divisive," in a statement on Wednesday. "We are deeply concerned about all deliberate attempts to offend members of any religious or ethnic group," said Stephen Engelken, the second-ranking diplomat at the embassy.

The U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Tuesday issued a statement saying the U.S. government "in no way condones such acts of disrespect against the religion of Islam, and is deeply concerned about deliberate attempts to offend members of religious or ethnic groups." It said it condemned the "offensive initiative" by the Florida church.

The U.S. ambassador to Iraq, James Jeffrey, issued a joint statement with Lloyd Austin, the commanding general of U.S. forces in Iraq, to condemn the act.

In an interview with ABC television, Mr Obama said he hoped Mr Jones "understands that what he's proposing to do is completely contrary to our values as Americans, that this country has been built on the notion of freedom and religious tolerance".

Sorry to rain on your parade dixie.

Seanie - they probably have a few alright - but what needs to me remembered is that many of the folks in the southern states of aint the brightest of folks. I would say that outside of the stereotypical hillbilly imbecile demographic - this movement to burn the Quoran has zero support at all.

magpie seanie

Yes, but there are quite a few of the "stereotypical hillbilly imbecile demographic" and they all get to vote come election time the same as everyone else.

I'm a bit annoyed with your previous post Puck as there's a quote from Sarah Palin in it that I cannot disagree with.  ;D

Puckoon

That did cross my mind as I put her quote in there. I was pleasantly surprised that she got it right this time too.

Don't worry, she gets a decent dig in at the mosque/ community centre in the full quote.

QuoteBook burning is antithetical to American ideals. People have a constitutional right to burn a Koran if they want to, but doing so is insensitive and an unnecessary provocation – much like building a mosque at Ground Zero.

I would hope that Pastor Terry Jones and his supporters will consider the ramifications of their planned book-burning event. It will feed the fire of caustic rhetoric and appear as nothing more than mean-spirited religious intolerance. Don't feed that fire. If your ultimate point is to prove that the Christian teachings of mercy, justice, freedom, and equality provide the foundation on which our country stands, then your tactic to prove this point is totally counter-productive.

Our nation was founded in part by those fleeing religious persecution. Freedom of religion is integral to our charters of liberty. We don't need to agree with each other on theological matters, but tolerating each other without unnecessarily provoking strife is how we ensure a civil society. In this as in all things, we should remember the Golden Rule. Isn't that what the Ground Zero mosque debate has been about?

- Sarah Palin

Puckoon

Maybe I need to read that for a 4th or 5th time - but after three reads I still can't agree with your assertion that Sarah Palin is having a dig at anyone in that post AFS? I think her comments on this matter make sense.

Strange there's no mention yet today of the Imam..(ye know the one that's out there
at our expense building relations and educating us on peace and tolerance)
he was on CNN last night threatening and inciting retribution for us if the Mosque doesn't go ahead on the proposed location as it will be deemed an insult to the Muslim world!!
Peaceful religion me hole....what'll it be next ::)
