Only have it second hand but Zinzan Brooke wrote about togging out against Victoria in the Australasian games and makes reference to a bloke "the Victorians had kept in a cage and fed raw meat to for a few weeks" tangling with him, the bold Jim. Brooke decided to swat him off with a few slaps but Jimmy just laughed at him and came back for more. When he was making the breakthrough with Melbourne in the late 80's he had a team mate called Sean Wight who, if anything looked even better than Jim, amazingly. Wight was born in Glasgow, spent some time growing up in London and played a bit of minor footy with Kerry (could be open to correction on some of this). Injuries buggered him and he disappeared off the scene unfortunately.

Brian Stynes joined up with Melbourne in the early 90's and actually played in a reserve grade grand final for them (curtain raiser to the big one). Only lasted two  or three years and didn't quite make it. Seem to recall a lot of AFL clubs trimming their numbers at the time and he lost out. Not sure if he was involved with the Dubs panel in 95.

I remember Wight. He did play minor for Kerry. Had a massive fetch. I often wondered what became of him.

I dare say Jim would have made some difference to the Dublin team of the late 80s / early 90s had he stayed! Even apart from football Dublin/Ireland's loss was certainly Melbourne/Australia's gain.

Been away for a few days and only got to watch this last night. Unbelievable programme and as has been said would bring tears to a stone. Very strong willed and inspirational character. Brian junior is the image of his Dad as well I thought. Best of luck to him and his family in his ongoing battle

I dont consider myself an emotional man. I probably have a rather cynical outlook to many things.  My own life and family has seen quite a few tragedies, so I dont take well to some "Ah poor me" documentaries on TV.

Bear that in mind when I conclude that this documentary on Jim Stynes is .... Inspiriational.

Whether you know anything or nothing about the man, his background, his sporting career, make sure you watch this program if you can.  If you are in Ireland and have never tried the RTE iPlayer links, let this be your first time.  That version of the program lasts just over 40 minutes (with all the ad breaks taken out) so that's all the time you need to borrow from your day.

When he spoke near the end to the Reach Group, I was waiting for them to break out into forced applause and raucous cheering like you normally see on most Self-Help talk-groups.  But No.  It was mostly Silence.  Respect.  Empathy.  Admiration.  Inspiration.

Sean Wight played 150 AFL games for Melbourne. More than handy backman and pretty hard nut. Wasn't quite big enough to be key position player but often got jobs on much bigger and heavier opponents and did a reasonable job. Looks like he is still living in Melbourne and has forged a career in IT.
