I don't know why Suarez didn't put his head on it - it didn't look particularly high and he'd only raised his hand to just above head level, tiredness played a part I suppose. He was right to do what he did, give his team one last chance and it paid off.

Gyan showed balls of steal to step up to take the first penalty and score it. Someone said they made him do it? Maybe he wanted to and it should have settled down the rest of the team after the miss in extra time.

As for yer man taking the last penalty, I would not be impressed with him - trying something like that in such an important penalty he needs a slap. Pure arrogance that could have cost them.

Fair play to Uruguay, good to see one of the weaker counties come through.  Not bad for a country with roughly the same population as the Free State.

I've a sneaking suspicion that Germany will turn over the Argies to day and Holland will win the whole shebang.

I don't know if it was arrogance. I think he saw the goalie move early for all the earlier penalties and just lobbed it down the middle where he knew the goalie would not be.

Has anyone else noticed how poor this world cup has been from the point of view of most games being determined by player mistakes, goalkeeping errors, own goals, sendings off, refereeing mistakes etc. Yesterdays 2 games are a perfect example of this, From 5 goals, 2 were goal keeping errors, 1 was a combo of goal keeping error and own goal. There was a needless sending off and a missed penalty to win with the last kick of the game. In any normal 2 games you might get 0 or 1 of those type of gaffes but not at this world cup.

Does anybody remember who missed the penalty for Ireland in the second round game against Spain in 2002? We had 2 and scored one and missed one.

Capt Pat

Argentina will be alright I think. I can see an open game a bit like Germany v England, which might suit the Germans but will suit Messi and Tevez more than anyone and I can see Messi scoring a hat trick.

If that was the case he should have at least drilled it. Had the keeper stood and caught that the player would have been slaughtered and rightly  so.

Henry's was just an instinctive reaction and he probably never expected to get away with it. It was very late on, he lost control of the ball and probably just said "Arra fcuk it anyway j'aime le foot", expecting a free kick to be given. The ref didn't give it and he said feck all. Fair enough.

Suarez was a "Ach ballix we're bate, I have to".

An RĂ abu.

That's what I was trying to say.

You're being a bit harsh Pints thinking he should have had the composure to try and head a ball headed from about 4 yds out, he did waht he had to do and he would be properly lauded in ireland as a hero, taking one for the team (as richard sadlier said with a grin last night)

What Suarez did tonight I think nearly any man in that position would do.

I thought it was a travesty, i don't buy into the belief that because a sportsman is a professional that somehow excuses cheating as part of their game, even the ex-player pundits (such as lee dixon on last night) go along with this shit.
There is no excuse for cheating despite what the lee dixons of this world think, sport isn't just about winning its also about fair play, taking part and representing yourself/nation/team on the pitch.

Would we excuse cheating in other sports would we be happy to hear that mcdowell was carding lower scores that what he had actually acheived or that he kicked the ball out of a divet, would we say sure you'd have done it yourself etc. I think and hope not.

Capt Pat

The most important thing of all to say is that it wasn't cheating. It was gamesmanship. Where you turn up the heat on your opponent within the rules of the game to make things more difficult for him. I say it was within the rules as he got caught, conceded a penalty and got sent off.

It would have been cheating if he had got away with it. The other thing in mitigation is that it should never have been a free kick in the first place, was that free kick won by Ghana cheating.

Not a chance Ronaldo or Messi or Henri or any of the poster boys would have been penalised like that.

Yer hole. Clear handball, only possible result is a penalty and a red card regardless of the player.

Fancy Germany to win today, either aet or penalties.
