Wasn't the planning  permission due to expire  around now ? Obviously this is  why there's now a rethink.

100%. It has been a complete clusterf**k since day one, and the same people seem to be running things now as they did then. It doesn't appear any lessons have been learned from the entire process.

Reality finally hitting the deluded Ulster Council cheerleaders in the face.

When Ulster finals completely off the cards and with the other stadiums the Ulster Council already has access to for playing semi-finals, I can't see there being any sort of logic in building anything with capacity over 10,000. I really wouldn't be surprised if in the end it was something like a 6,000 to 8,000 sized stadium. The fact that this article is talking about the London money being in doubt strikes me as the kind of thing a GAA insider would be briefing to a "friendly" journalist like Fogarty as preparation for a much reduced size of stadium.

They should not build a very small stadium, but should show some modest ambition for Antrim, which has twice the population of other Ulster counties. Build a comfortable stadium of the same size as other Ulster counties and try and get people to fill it. Then use the Irish government money to make Clones comfortable.

You will though. Ulster GAA, Antrim GAA, Nationalist politicians who favour them. They have always been given a bye ball on this, and always will be. It's how cults work. In very recent years, even when it has been clear to the really slow learners that the GAA are the problem, they've clicked their fingers and got thousands of sheep marching in support of them.
And it will never change because they simply blame the artificial bogeyman of Unionism and/or British government and we all buy it because we hate them. A tactic that has worked throughout history.

100%. The fact is we might end up with what was ever needed. The 15/20 year absolute bullshit will forever stick in the craw for me. It was a solid income for others I suppose, with their own new builds along the way.

This was on the cards from a long way back.  The GAA has been holding out for some kind of cash injection from the likes of the British gov.  That seems to have been the only plan.
