Cost mayo that game

O'Shea was brought on by Andy. It's up to Andy to make the big calls. The game was lost in the final minutes when Mayo had an overlap and a clear goal chance, but the player in possession bottled it and took the easy option point. That's where the game was lost.

A fortnight ago a similar scenario was butchered and Monaghan got a goal on the break. It was a split second decision and Sam made the correct one, he would've needed to float a pass over the Tyrone back which isn't easy at the pace he was going.

Or option A go for the shot himself? Has to go for the jugular there.

O rourke hit with a bottle at full time I see.

Are the Sam Maguire credit union loans on hold for now down in Ballina?

Aaron Boone

Every team has been beaten at least once. The purists will be objecting.

I was wondering how they  were going to  conspire to losing  this one. It was inevitable.

It's inevitable when it's Mayo but it goes unnoticed when it's anyone else.

During the game I sensed the bench would be the difference, Andy still gave O'Shea the chance, there was a time when the Mayo crowd would roar when he came on, now it's groans. The new rules don't suit him unfortunately.

I'm afraid in the modern system it was a poor decision. It was the easy decision, but not the correct one.

Predictable result in Kingspan Breffni, a predictable Cavan performance and predictable exit. Both defences had gaps in the first half and although Dubs were getting scores that bit easier, Cavan were standing firm enough and only one down at the break. Until the 20th minute of the second half, the result was still a live issue but trailing by four or five, Cavan,  by then living off scraps in attack, butchered a number of very scoreable opportunities they'd found very hard to come by. One of them a fortuitous goal chance that Gerry Smith just leathered like a donkey and hoped for the best. Real ploughman's stuff although to his credit, he had a very busy game otherwise and managed a point with this effort. You're just a pretence of an intercounty team when you're so brittle and lacking composure when the heat comes on and opportunites present, but very sadly, that's now very firmly Cavan's ingrained footballing culture, as evidenced by our minors' shitting the bed against Tyrone. You knew these misses would eventually drain our bravehearts (punishing conditions notwithstanding) and they'd soon check out mentally, so we duly caved in and Dublin won pulling up, despite not having played overly well themselves. There are no more soft touch opponents like Cavan left for the Dubs in the draw now, whose goalies will be handing them chance after chance, with lads missing points from 14 yards out and setting up their counter attacks.

That's McCabe's first year done. No real uptick or change of culture evident. Retirements incoming. Another season where we went through the motions gamely enough and gave a passable impression of a footballing county, but it's now going to get worse before it gets better.

Same old since the 1950s...

Delighted to get the win today, not the best quality game but very engaging with it being so close, level on 10 different occasions.

Couple of points, young Cassidy had a superb 1st half for us, some great link up play and always wanting to take on his man. Kept the score board ticking over too.

McCurry was sensational when he came on, he has always been a huge confidence player and you could tell he was well up for it. I was behind the goals he was shooting into and his 2nd point (I think) was absolutely over the post or just wide, not sure how it appeared on TV.

Brian Kennedy has turned into such an important player, he was like a senior playing minor football on those kick outs.

We weren't at our best today but buzzing to be in a QF. Feet up now and watch other teams beat the feck out of eachother next week.

To echo and earlier question, will the QF draws be fixed this week? I'm assuming not. Would be handy to know if we're out on the Saturday or Sunday.

Malachy o Rourke got alot of criticism in the league now sitting pretty in all Ireland quarter final.

The decision by Sam Callinan to not square the ball to Conroy was strange, Tyrone were always going to get another play to equalise it or get a two pointer to win. Flynn also missed a brilliant goal chance as did towey.

Have to feel for big O Shea the service hes given Mayo. Of course if he kicked a fairly simple score Moran would be hailed a genius, but maybe friendships and loyalty can mess with good judgement.

Same era as P Harte who some were hoping may make a return for the hard ground.

Where has  Mayo's Tommy Conroy  been in recent years?

I'd forgotten all  about him.

Did he not do the cruciate?

gallsman

Tommy Goals had a really bad cruciate tear and hasn't been the same since. Has struggled for form and fitness with quite a few other injuries in the interim. Today was as lively as I've seen him in a long time.
