Baile Brigín 2

A fairly random one that came up over a foaming ale in D3.

Kilkenny as we know are allowed not field in football. With the ladies merging will the ladies football team be nixed? Will they run 3 out of 4?

Also nobody knew exactly why KK are allowed not field a football team. Anyone remember?

With British teams. And get whipped day one and out.

They don't enter the league or championship.

Why not?

Cause they don't have too?

Why do people get wound up so much by 2 counties disrespecting football, over half of them disrespect hurling and very little said about it

But why don't they have to?

Why can't Mayo or Kerry withdraw from hurling and spend all their money on football?

Disrespect is one thing. Not fielding is another.

Maybe they don't want to? I thought a few teams were going to pull the plug in hurling the other year but I don't think it materialised.

In fact the Gaa proposed pulling a number of hurling teams out of the hurling league the other year but I think there was uproar.

Cavan pulled out of county hurling a few years ago.

Couldn't have! As bb2 said it's impossible, he's busy looking for the rule though, should be back soon

I jest

Some counties just don't have the commitment, numbers or the stomach to fight to improve on their lesser code.

it's a shame, as a committed dual player (back in the day) I hated, hated probably too strong, but got annoyed at players opting out of one code to stick with their more chance to win silverware code, I can understand why with regards to time effort and their own choice of favourite code, but niggled at me anyways..

Counties should have that commitment to develop the lesser code and raise the standards, but if there is no 'ruling' stating they have to then they either pay lip service to it ( like the multiple counties do for hurling) or not bother like Kilkenny do for football

They've actually reached a couple of finals in relatively recent times. They did field in the league in the past, certainly during Nicky Brennan's tenure as president, but the simple fact was that there was no team at a level that could allow them to have a competitive game, so withdrew, without much protest from anyone else.
It's an amateur game, if players aren't willing to put themselves forward for 7 successive humiliations each season, we can't force them. The status quo whereby they compete in the junior and their club champions play in the Leinster junior is accepted at this point.
