According to his Wiki page, Irwin cost United 650K in 1990. That was still a tidy sum for a player in those days, especially a full back. The biggest money transfer that summer was Dennis Wise to Chelsea for 1.6 million.

Seamus for £60 grand though would be hard to beat... Did Everton give Sligo any extra for more games played?

Great value for 7 league titles 33 goals, a Cup winners cup, Champions league 3 FA cups and a league cup ;)

£625 grand is cheap for a player to bring returns like that..

None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought.

Quote from: J70 on May 20, 2026, 01:51:14 PMWas listening to one of the Irish Independent podcasts and they said the Hill Dickinson was almost empty when Seamus Coleman came out with his family for his farewell.

Can't believe the fans wouldn't want to show their appreciation, so am assuming it was a f**k-up on the part of the club?

Maybe a bit biased given he's a fellow south Donegal man, class act and GAA enthusiast, but has there ever been a better value player?

Denis Irwin?
They paid a decent wedge at the time for Irwin, was far from a cheap buy.

Henrik Larsson is a better call.

Just shows how badly run Sligo Rovers were to let him walk for €60k with no add ons.

Nope. Sligo bent over for Everton, they couldn't believe their luck. A very badly run club

Would the fans not have known that it was his last home game and gave him the reception he deserved? Poor form regardless.

I'd assume they didn't know.

Regardless of what happens against Brentford on Sunday (and it could be ugly for Slot should they lose), the Anfield crowd will still hang on to see Salah and Robertson off afterwards.

It is known he is leaving.

I assume it just wasn't communicated to the fans he would be doing a lap

Sligo Rovers owed Everton a favour for letting Dixie Dean play for them, scoring 11 goals in 11 games.

I kid you not.

In 1939 two years after he left Everton? Nope.

The worst bit of this is there was other interest from other clubs. £60k after a bidding war ffs.

At least they got a decent fee for Elding.

Of course it was known. What didn't help was getting beat 3-1 by Sunderland and supporters making a quick exit out of Hill Dickinson Stadium, any chance they can improve the name of the stadium?

Well done to Arsenal the best and most consistent team. A club with big history and tradition going 22 years without a league title was too long same for Liverpool in 2020 going 30 years and Man United going 26 years in the 93.  Goes to show what can happen when a club is poorly run and allowed to fester.

SaffronSports

From a Leeds perspective, we couldn't lay a glove on Arsenal. Smashed home and away. Def best team we played this year.

Denis Irwin?

Peter Schmeichel was  a similar price to Irwin.

Cantona another bargain buy  in hindsight

Ronaldo? Won everything and then made a huge profit on him. Vidic, Van der Sar, Evra all bargain buys as eell.

I was looking at the Irish connection lol

the £500k for Schmeichel and Irwin and the million for Cantona weren't small fees at the time. Baggio for £8m in the same year Schmeichel moved smashed the world transfer record.

So using the current world record as a benchmark Cantona was €28m and the other two €14m in todays money. Good value in the modern madness but not total bargains either.
