It may have been Iranian extremists. It may have been other Islamist radicals. There's a slim chance this was done by a far-Right group. Their aim is to terrify, to make us feel we are not safe. They succeeded.

It turns out that phrases I once thought were metaphorical are also literal: I have a pain in my neck which becomes more acute whenever there is an attack. There are butterflies in my stomach constantly. The cry echoes in Jewish WhatsApp groups: "Where will we be safe?" The answer – as we see our friends and cousins hiding in shelters from Iranian missiles – is simple: nowhere.

We had the platitudes from the politicians. Platitudes we have coming out of our ears. There's Zack Polanski, who has the chutzpah to use his Jewish heritage to kosherise the rampant Jew-hatred in the Greens: "Anti-Semitism is vile and has no place here." Later this week, the Greens will be voting whether to make Jew-hatred part of their constitution with the motion: "Zionism is racism."

There was Nigel Farage who used the attack to beat his usual drum: "More undocumented young men are crossing the Channel, many will be from Iran." Not today Nigel. Whoever did it: the cause is our own weakness, the poison was already in our society.

Sir Keir Starmer, who, in Opposition, sat alongside Jeremy Corbyn –  the man who called Hamas and Hezbollah his friends – spoke of this "deeply shocking" attack. He insisted: "Anti-Semitism has no place in our society." That, in my opinion, is a lie.

Starmer knows how much anti-Semitism there is in our society. It's sitting there at the dinner table with us. He knows how deeply embedded it was in his own party – the one he told us to vote for. He knows how there has been an explosion of Jew hatred since Oct 7. He promised he would do something. We are still waiting.

How much violence does he need to see? How many Jews need to die before something is done? Before it goes beyond platitudes? I am not sure he has the courage. I am not sure any of them do.

We've had more than two years of hate marches – they were singing "from the river to the sea" under the Tories before Labour. I thought, I hoped it would end when there was a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas – even though I knew we were stuck in a new normal.

But hate marches continue, the hatred endures, it radicalises, it regenerates and it becomes more extreme. They cry "globalise the intifada" and, even after we saw what that looked like in Manchester and then Bondi Beach, our weak Government can't even outlaw people calling for violence against Jews.

A few weeks ago, I sat with Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary, as two medics described the horrific bullying and anti-Semitism they had encountered in the health service. They said no one was willing to help because – they were told – Jews aren't a minority. And even if we were, we probably deserved it because of Israel. They were in tears, I was in tears, even he had tears swimming in his eyes as he admitted he was "ashamed" to hear their stories.

And so we have an inquiry into anti-Semitism in the NHS to go alongside the one into schools and the previous ones into universities. And still, the hatred ramps up and we wonder where it will end. Inquiries feel like kicking the problem down the road.

Howard Jacobson has written a brilliant novel about the post-Oct 7 world called Howl. That word sums up how I feel. I want to howl: "You have to stop this!" But even if I howled it outside 10 Downing Street, the sound would echo, it would clatter and then it would fall to the ground like a 1p coin. Ignored.
