I think I read something a while back that part of the reason the public sector worker per capita ratio is so high here compared to England is that we provide some of the public services for England/Wales. No idea what the percentage is and I'm not trying to justify the number of public sector workers we have, but it might not be fair to do a direct like for like comparison if this is the case.

I think its also bound to be a factor in England that private sector jobs there generally pay more than here, which makes the public sector in England a less attractive job than it is here.

HMRC and the home office have a lot of employees here who wouldn't come under the NICS.

Plaintiff's barristers probably knew case was doomed from the start. Had to do as instructed I suppose. A lot of lawyers getting their pockets lined.
Reminds me of a visit to the courts in Belfast and barristers in cloaks swishing around and men in suits, carrying files, bringing clients into rooms for consultations...

Is obscene that you can be wrongfully sued, win your case and have to pay costs.

That is madness. Whatever you think of Adams; for someone to be sued and the case dismissed, plaintiff found not liable or not proven or whatever the term is... you've to pay costs?!!

It now looks like the earlier ruling about not being able to recover costs fell completely by the wayside, at a very late stage, during the actual hearing.

"The court unexpectedly directed at the final stages of the trial that it wished to consider whether the proceedings might amount to an abuse of process.

"The trial judge's decision to raise this issue, resulted, for the first time, in a real risk that the claimants, vulnerable victims of terrorism, could face devastating personal liability for legal costs as finding of abuse of process would remove the claimants' costs protection and require them to pay Mr Adams his full legal costs."

The lawyers said the claimants had "no realistic choice" but to settle, given they were "faced with even a small risk of life-changing financial consequences".
