Quote from: Capt Pat on March 20, 2026, 12:00:40 AMThere is a large house in Meath to be demolished because it didn't have planning permission. The wife of the couple who owned the house is seemingly not too worried. She said this decision took 20 years in which time the kids are all grown up and moved on.

Surely the state can get their decision made in a timely fashion if indeed there is a decision like this that needs to be made.
Could there not have been something else done with this house? Some waste, eejits for building it in the first place, don't know the specifics of this case but planning regulations in the country are a joke in general.

Shocker.

No is the answer.

How does a house like that get connected for electricity and water if it doesn't have planning permission?

Quote from: gallsman on March 20, 2026, 10:04:21 AMThey bought land with a sterilisation order on it. They applied for planning permission for a 1,000 sqf bungalow which, naturally, was refused because of the sterilisation order. They then went ahead and built a 6,000 sqf monstrosity and readily admit that they knew they had no planning permission but were fed up. They decided they were in for a penny, in for a pound.

The council got its first demolition order in, I think, 2008. The Murrays have spent the last 20 years avoiding every level of the legal system. That agreed to vacate the house a few years ago but now admit that they only did that to buy time in the hope they could pull a miracle out of their holes to rescue the situation.

The Supreme Court said a few months ago that they had "driven a coach and four" through the country's planning laws.

Entitled cowboys who have brought every last bit of this on themselves. They deserve every bit of scorn coming their way.
No sympathy. Got what they deserved. Prison time too good for them.

1. Are they going to jail?

2. Not up to speed with the story but can the house not be sold and money recouped?

1. Of course not
2. No, because the house itself is the issue. They still own the land. The council can't sell it, and of they would the owners would have a strong legal argument that if somone can own the house it should be them.

They are supposedly not on the country.

The house has already been demolished, but even if it hadn't been, what would you suggest would have been a reasonable same value of it?

She says they aren't. But they have said lots of things. They aren't on the level.

There is no easy answer here. The council can't just let people build on farmland like that. If people can just ignore the law like that it's a slippery slope.

If they weren't Burke-esque they would have gone for retention 20 years ago and swallowed the fine. Maybe demolishing part of the house might have worked. But they refused to engage.

There is a very, very easy answer for anyone who has so much as a cursory glance at the facts of the matter.

The land had and has a sterilisation order on it. They were never getting planning permission for a house of any size, even if they built the one they actually submitted plans for (that was 1/6 the size) that was turned down. Unless they had the worst solicitor in Ireland, they would have known this when they bought the land. Remember, this was absolute peak Celtic Tiger Ireland. Money was cheap. Rules were broken. People got away with murder. And they STILL wouldn't have got pp for any residential structure on that plot.

The house had to come down regardless. The fact they're clearly utter c***ts just means sympathy for them should be in short supply.

The Murrays will both be in court today (apparently) on the contempt charge.
