Got a cosy job and won Sam, if he'd went to Oz could have just been another one of many to have tried and failed over there

Ciaran Kilkenny came back veery quickly if memory serves me right?

imtommygunn

Not even sure he lasted a year.

Only there a few months. It wasn't that he was lured back with work, he wasn't enjoying it.
The point about players up and down the country turning down AFL by wealthy backers here isn't accurate. Mayo have lost Pearse Hanley and Oisin Mullin previously.

Did Kyle Coney not stay for a short period as well?

He was out there for a short period too, and it wasn't for him.

There isn't loads of sugar Daddies around the Country turning heads for players to stay. They would have to match what the AFL clubs are offering plus accommodation and other perks. A rookie gets 80k, then it rises after 2 years . Zach Touhy made millions by the end of his career.

Probably the lifestyle/culture as well as just wanting to try something new would be a big factor too forgetting the money as well. Couldn't begrudge any young person wanting to give it a go for a while.

Mayo rising prospect Kobe McDonald is set for a move to the AFL, the Irish Examiner understands.

The Crossmolina Deel Rovers clubman, who produced several standout performances in his debut senior season this year, has been linked with a move Down Under in recent months.

Several clubs have been interested, including St Kilda, Brisbane and Melbourne.

It is understood McDonald made the trip to Melbourne earlier this year and is set to sign with a view to joining a club after he completes his Leaving Cert. The deal is expected to be announced within the coming week.
The 17-year-old midfielder is the son of county legend Ciarán McDonald. A 2004 All-Star, McDonald won four Connacht titles during his playing career before going on to coach Mayo. He was a selector on the team that reached an All-Ireland final in 2021.

Kobe McDonald recently scored 1-5 in a Man of the Match televised display against Belmullet in the Mayo SFC quarter-final. He was part of the Connacht minor winning side last year.

It is a big blow for Mayo who saw Pearce Hanley depart for Australia in 2007. He went on to enjoy a remarkable career, playing 169 games across spells with the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast.

Two-time Young Footballer of the Year Oisín Mullin is currently at Geelong. He joined for the 2023 season and played in the AFL Grand Final recently. The Cats were beaten by Brisbane in the decider.

McDonald is one of several rising stars closing in on a move to the AFL.

Kerry U20 Ben Murphy has been heavily linked to a move to Brisbane having travelled out for a trial in August. The Austin Stacks clubman recently scored 0-3 from play in the Kerry SFC final but is now on the cusp of becoming the latest Irish player to join the Lions. Kilkenny's Darragh Joyce and Tyrone's Conor McKenna are currently on the list.

From the Bunker

The onus is on Mayo clubs and County board to sort out lads like this. Make it a hard decision for the lad to leave financially.

Ah let him go and see abit of the world. Be a serious chunk out of the budget to try match the wages/perks that Oz will give him. Then if you do it for him you've to do it for them all.

Best wishes to him but a real loss for the GAA as a whole.

The average wage in AFL to increase in 2 years. McDonald could return at 23/24 and have made a good salary.

Did Kerry not sort David Clifford? Tyrone not sort Cathal McShane? Few Dubs? Armagh have turned a few soccer heads (significantly less expensive tbf). Mayo can stop him going if they get organised - and obviously if he wants to stay and play GAA.

Cifford wanted to stay and win All Irelands. https://www.balls.ie/gaa/david-clifford-kerry-afl-638182

Mayo lost Oisin Mullen who was an established Senior player. How could they stop McDonald going?
McShane was an exception and and not even part of the Tyrone panel anymore.
