From the Bunker

They are old, old men now! All credit to them they kept the Rebel songs alive when it was unfashionable to do so. Especially in the South. They released modern rebel songs of their own also in the 70's and 80's, Acknowledging the new wave of the Struggle.  West Brit - RTE as good as treated them as if they were not there. Their Radio play was often reduced to Larry Gogan's top 30 on Sunday afternoons on 2fm (or what ever it was called them).

They have hit a goldmine in the last few years and they are currently 2 years saying goodbye, as they said they would retire on their 60 year anniversary.

They are not squeaky clean. But they have hard necks on them and endured some criticism in their day.

While the  subject of croke park concerts are in discussion  on another thread, would the  Wolfe Tones sell out Croke Park?

There did seem  a right crowd   in Belfast in recent years, to be fair

From the Bunker

Only if they had two really strong guest acts. And would there be two strong guest acts that would appear under their Bill?

Kneecap for one. People underestimate the popularity of the Wolfe Tones especially with the youth.

Playing a festival, especially something like the Feile that has its own buzz about it with prime doing lots of different stuff, is one thing. Pretty much everyone there is from West Belfast. They're not travelling from far and wide to see the Wolfe Tones.

Selling out an 80,000 seater stadium (with everything it takes to put on the show there) is a very different prospect.

Wouldn't happen in a million years.

Look at the crowds going to see them at EP. Look their songs going to the top of the charts that time the blueshirts wanted a black and tan commemoration. They're a lot more popular than RTE will have you think.

Again, a festival. They're already there and have bought their tickets to see many, many other acts.

How many of the people there do you think are travelling to Dublin to pay god knows how much to watch them in Croker? Do you not see the difference?

Yeah, I agree  there. I recall their  Gerry Adams-style ambush on  the Late Late a few years back.

Let's Get  a campaign going. Wolfe Tones,  5 nights in Croke Park next year  ;D

Surprises me how many young people know the songs of The Wolfe Tones and Irish Brigade etc.

The crowds at TWT's set at Electric Picnic was crazy.

The young ones loved it.
