I can't understand isnt far more younger people. When we were teens into 20s went by the bus loads... maybe all the TV coverage

GAA Club Fan

Club football on the Fri and Sun of the semi final doesn't help.
Very club centric in Tyrone.

omagh_gael

All counties are on a level playing field when it comes to the expense.

Armagh won the AI last year and their fan base appears to be even more intense this year. Our post 21 hangover doesn't hold water.

Our underage teams are flying, you'd think there'd be momentum built there. Having been to loads of u20s games this year we tended to be outnumbered there as well.

Club football is flying in the county which is deadly, are we starting to become the Derry of the GAA when club trumps county?

Even in the media there's an almost stale approach to Tyrone. Having listened to most of leading GAA podcasts last week and this week Itd not be exaggeration to say we took up about 5% of the conversation.

Strange times.

HokeyPokey

Support has been pretty bad at Omagh and when played nearby.

Fantastic news coming out yesterday evening off the back of being in an All Ireland Semi Final, any player for their clubs reserve team is now expected to definitely not enjoy themselves that weekend and definitely not stay in dublin after the game as they have a championship fixture to fulfill.

An absolute joke. If that's the level of consideration given to the reserve fixtures (league or championship) just call them off.

Quote from: ONeill on July 02, 2025, 10:30:37 PMI think those who were there made plenty of noise; there just weren't enough of us.

It's worth a study.

Something happened post-2021 in terms of the supporter psyche. In the latter Harte years, there was a bit of staleness, but I don't think it's still a hangover of that.

I genuinely don't know why it is what it is.

2021? I feel like supporters haven't came out in the same numbers post 2005, definitely post 2008/2009. It is odd as it's not due to lack of interest in football as club football is so strong and I'm sure most are well informed on the county team and not indifferent.

I know the dubs have fallen off big time (understandably) and the likes of Kildare maybe, but I think those are more casual, but I can't think of similar instances of it.

The county set up probably does need to do more. Even their social media stuff is inconsistent, not even always having the team up before a game.

Interested in other theories.

The semi-final of 2015:

https://www.rte.ie/sport/gaa/2015/0823/723054-kerry-v-tyrone/

"The Tyrone crowd, who significantly outnumbered their opposition"

Attendance was 53,044

https://munster.gaa.ie/event/0all-ireland-senior-football-championship-semi-final-kerry-v-tyrone/

The attendance at same stage four years later was down to 33,848

https://www.rte.ie/sport/gaa/2019/0811/1068238-kerry-come-alive-in-second-half-to-surge-past-tyrone/

So what happened between 2015 and 2019? for me it was the 2 defeats to Dublin in 2017 and 2018, especially the hammering in 2017. These defeats seemed to do a lot of damage to supporter morale at that time. Then in 2021 a lot of supporters probably happy enough to stay at home with Covid and the 3 subsequent seasons after the football produced by Tyrone was dire. So dire in fact that Saturday's game versus Dublin was only the second time Tyrone played championship football in Croke Park since the 2021 Final.
Maybe the Dublin victory will reignite passion among the Tyrone supporters and we get a good turnout on the 12th.

I didn't think there where many Tyrone supporters there on Saturday at the start but when Tyrone surged at the end it seemed like we had alot more than i though.

For me its down to 2 main issues-

Pre 2021- Tyrone played some boring lateral football under last few years of Mickey. You knew you wouldnt get beat by much but you knew it wasnt going to be good enough against the top teams.

Post 2021- 4 years since AI win and we haven't put 2 good never mind great back to back performances together. Still haven't done this yet under Malachy either.

Over say last 8 years Tyrone football has not been great to watch or to get excited about bar 2021. No wonder fans dont want to spend massive money attending games. Hopefully we are starting to turn the corner and put that all behind us.

Sometimes it up to the team to bring supporters out. Much like Armagh last year and Kerry in the quarter finals.

Hmmm interesting... Were there other significant games on before or after? I think it was also in line with a general trend of football being not entertaining and the dubs dominating. Maybe misremembering. In my head I'm thinking of 2003 where there were 50-60k Tyrone supporters for the Kerry match.

The support has bounced back in other counties, but the trend seems to have continued with Tyrone? I felt some enthusiasm about MOR and the strong squad etc., but crowds still dismal.

TBH I did expect more Tyrone supporters at the Dublin game. New manager, quarter-final and nothing like playing the Dubs.. memories of those great quarter-final occasions in 2005.. but wasn't like that at all. Dubs didn't bring same numbers as those days either.
Drawn game '05 when Dublin got the goal before half-time, I never heard noise like it in Croke Park.

I remember sitting in the middle of the Hogan and the noise when they went in at half time was probably the loadest I remember in Croker.

They made a comeback in the replay. They hit 4/5 in a row and the noise was incredible. Conal keaney got a few scores

Not sure I can give too many answers to the support question. A few theories;

- I think Tyrone fans lost the habit of going in the later days of Harte, and then we'd covid. Sometimes going to these things is a habit.
- The Tyrone Club scene is very active. There have been games every week more or less which takes a lot of the focus. When our game ends at the weekend, thoughts immediately turn to the next big game, and that's usually the club game. In other counties the club season can bypass people. If Tyrone was out once every 3 x weeks you have a chance to build that hype and get momentum among the support which is no longer the case.
- Tyrone used to be hated, Spillane, RTE, Southeners etc. I think that got the juices going. Us against the world. We are probably not hated enough.
- I think the team lack personality a bit. Mugsy, Ricey, etc. They are all a bit samey character wise now.
- The County does not have an all county identity anymore. Dooher, O'Neill, McShane, McNamee all represented N Tyrone for example. There is no representation there any more so we're probably losing something there too.
- I find the young ones don't drink as much. In the past it was bus trips and a bit of craic. That would have brought a huge number of young ones who had no interest in the GAA. Again, the fact that there are Club games on top of County games is probably a hindrance. A young club player will not bother with the game so he can be ready for the club. That stops him/her and 1/2 pals. Again, the CCC have lots of games to fit in to a short window with the starred system so it's a hard square to circle.

So to summarise you used to have a load of young drunk kids following you like armagh recently now you don't. But no doubt they will be back for the semi. Which everyone knows you have zero chance of winning.
