Why are we even still talking about this? It was a war, terrible things happen. Wars and terrible things have happened since. I don't believe it was a 'uniquely' terrible event, terrible and all that it was. The fact is it's constantly trotted out to remind us Europeans how terrible we are, and how we must continue to be punished for it. If it had happened to any other group of people, we wouldn't still be on about it. Unfortunately, it's become the 'foundational myth' for the West, and the West hasn't benefitted form looking back at it, one iota.

It would be undeniably healthy for there to be allowed a full, open, evidence based debate as to whether it happened in the way that history has fed it to us.
