Quote from: Brendan on January 02, 2025, 04:58:10 PMGenuine question, when will people grow out of only supporting Celtic when it comes to the old firm and no other time of the season because they want to prove their Irishness?

The Old Firm is no more so probably not worth answering the rest of your silly question.

Non Celtic fan, but why is the Old Firm no more?

New club. Rangers Mk 2. The old club died!

How is a new club allowed to play in Ibrox?

Quote from: marty34 on January 02, 2025, 08:00:16 PMAs I said earlier, it was basically a Rangers B team.
Was it a Rangers B Team for the recent league cup final? Tonight made just three changes to that starting 11.

Why are you not going on their 2 most recent league games? Regular keeper and right back (captain) out. A dodgy centre back pairing.

Rangers need to sell before they can bring lads in. They can hardly boot Clement as they couldn't afford his compo package as he signed a new deal last year.

Because for a cup final you normally start with your strongest available team.

I'd be playing my strongest team all the time.

If you have your right back, and captain, pulling out a few days before the game and their goalie pulls out the evening before the game I'd say it's a fairly weakened team.

Plus the lad at right back isn't even a right back. He's a left back.

Sterling, their centre back today is a right back. Propper is a very poor centre back. He's takes more stick than Scales.

It was a patched up Rangers team...of a poor Rangers team.

Why not the Glasgow derby?
A few years ago after one occasion when some amount of Rangers fans went apeshít in a riot, Celtic fc issued a statement in response to the chorus of defensive claims in the media peddling the two sides of the same coin argument along with large doses of whataboutery.  Celtic fc responded that they were not the flip side of any coin, that "we stand alone as a club".
Maybe the oldco/newco reason is used to explain but from a Celtic perspective, Celtic do not regard the club as being on one side of that firm.

But ironically, though for different reasons, Celtic and Rangers jointly own the trademark "old firm".

I suppose I don't buy into the rightly named 'new' Rangers thingy

Winning titles illegally yes but, if it looks like a pig, smells like a pig, acts like a pig then it having a 'different' name it's still the same pig.

If Celtic closed business tomorrow and reopened as 'new' Celtic I couldn't see the Celtic supporters look at them any differently

Outthought and outfought. Only CCV comes out of that with any credit.

They were liquidated. When that happened the Scottish leagues brought several teams up the leagues to balance the leagues out leaving a slot in League 2.

Charles Green bought the old clubs assets (stadium etc) under the name of Sevco Scotland Limited and applied for the remaining place in the Scottish league.

They are absolutely a new club as they let their old club die.

Celtic fans keep talking about "Sevco" and "No old firm" but what they're not grasping is that to anyone outside of Celtic supporters, Rangers are still Rangers.

Type Old Firm into google and you'll see multiple stories and links showing there was a game between them today!!

Celtic were clean shite today you'd hope it's a big wake up call.

Yeah, shoe other foot it would be the same thing. Rangers lied cheated and were punished properly for it, but they are still 'rangers' to everyone else.

In the post fact era the old idiom if you're auntie had balls she'd be your uncle no longer rings true - for a multitude of reasons

Demonstrably a fact that Rangers died, the new variant carries the same moniker and it means enough to people that they have to pretend its the same, thats OK, a really simple case of you do you

They weren't punished. That's a complete myth. The club ceased to exist. They set up as a new club with many new players as the old contracts ceased to exist. They were given preferential treatment to allow them to join the league and bypass the normal steps.

Commercially driven, doesn't make it right but at the end of the day the idea of Rangers old or new puts bums on seats, sells jerseys, burgers and beer - the powers that be weren't going to cut their nose off to spite their face, the idea of Rangers is so deeply embedded within a significant portion of Scottish society there had to be some clemency, why risk social fabric and incite trouble with a band of knuckle-draggers over a bit of fitbaw

It doesn't bother me in the slightest that they were given that advantage to jump other clubs to join the league as a brand new club. What annoys me is their fans and supporters in the media claiming they were somehow punished. It was the opposite of punishment, they were given serious advantages because the authorities were keen to get them back in the top flight asap.
