How are the scores going to be written now, then?

Say a team scores two goals, five 2-pointers, and three points.

Is it:

A) 2-13
B) 2-5-3
C) 19

I suggest we go with option C and stop this archaic scoring notation (A) that's a hangover from the days when goals outweighed any number of points. You needed to know the number of goals back then to know who won the match, but that went out the door in 1892. You don't need to know anymore. Notation A is opaque and confusing to first-time viewers of the game. There's enough for first-time viewers to take in without having to have someone on hand to explain the mental arithmetic that's involved.

Ozzy Rules, Rugby, Gridiron, Basketball, and all the other sports that have different values for different types of score all display their scores with a simple total, not an algebra equation. Time for the GAA to catch up.

I'd say it will just  be the same.

2-14

eg, 10 normal points, and two 2 pointers.

Why confuse things  even more?

Yep, leave as is.

Option C is the least confusing.

Option B provides the most information as to how the game has gone.

Maybe so , but imagine you're  a player  looking up at the  scoreboard with a few minutes to go . How long would it take you working  this out?

3-7-5
2-9-3

Who's winning?

(That  took me  20+ seconds to work out ).

Who the feck needs  that hassle?  At least  we're all accustomed to  calculating 2-13 or 3-11 quite quickly.

You could have the total in (brackets) afterwards very easily. Might help the less numerate about the place...

Every club in the country would need a new scoreboard then?

I'd be happy enough leaving it as it is, maybe try the new option on tv with the total in brackets?

But who really cares? When you turn on the rugby and see the score is 18-10 you might ask who scored the tries (if any). But do you really panic wondering 'oh 18 points! Did they score 6 penalties? Or 2 tries, 1 conversion and two penalties? Or 3 drop goals and 3 penalties? Or ? ...

No one cares. The total is all that matters and I dont see why we would continue to give goals a separate importance but not the 2 pointers (which while slightly less significant on the scoreboard are probably more impressive).

Is there a special sign that the ref gives now for a 2 pointer? Instead of the usual arm up, does he put two arms up or does he just give the two fingered sign to the supporters?
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought.

That's simply not true at all if you want to know anything other than who won the game.

If I'm reading scores and see that a team won by 5-6 to 0-19, that tells me more than a scoreline of 21-19. Maybe you don't care at all, good for you. Other people do and will.

Digital scoreboards will be able to be reprogrammed.

Every club in the country will have bigger issues to deal with as a result of the new rules than how they display their scoreboard.

Im interested what 5-6 to 0-19 tells you? After a quick calculation it tells me that a team won by 2 points

gallsman

And if you're interested (you're evidently not) it has the ability to tell you a lot more than that.

You don't care, I do. So f**k, move on.

jmcgdoire

Youre not making this case very well buddy.
Im also interested in which team scored more from play. Should that also be included in the scoreline?
