Big decision for harte to make around the half back line. Gareth is back, does he go to no.6 were he plays his best football for derry or do we play mcavoy there and leave full back line unchanged? Baker been excellent all year and be harsh to drop him to revert to the full back line we have had successfully for 3 years in clucky mcavoy mckaigue. Also how fit is conor doherty? If not fully fit I imagine we go 5. Gareth 6 mcavoy 7 gilmore. Big decisions for management team. Just like last year's semi v kerry, the loss of paudie mcgrogan over the last few games has been in my opinion the key to derrys problems at the back.

I don't think it's a big decision. McEvoy will be 6, that's were Harte has played him all year. Mckinless will be wing half back. There is zero chance Baker gets dropped, he set up two goals v Westmeath and has been playing very well.

The total dismissing of Derry has been winding me up in the build up. Listening to podcasts talking about who will face Mayo in the quarters etc. I suppose we've only ourselves to blame but it's a knockout game, very close to 50/50 with bookies. I would love it if we clicked again on Sat night. I'm expecting the strongest Derry line up we've seen in a while

Totally agree on Baker Mario. Standout performer this year. Would disagree with the gareth and mcavoy positions, derry have built there success over last couple years with gareth at 6 and mcavoy full back last year with glass also assisting in the sweeping role. That defensive structure has been ripped to shreds since the league and I believe for Saturday it would do the players then world of good to switch back to the tried and tested and positions which they are comfortable with each other playing. However I can understand your point with mcavoy who undoubtedly will be derrys future no.6 for years to come. Just wondering if harte throws a curve ball by possibly selecting an extra defender in attack like he did many times with tyrone to help solve that issue of conceding goals? Whatever he does though I still remain quietly confident that derry are coming into this game completely written off, media are giving us absolutely no chance and to be honest I like it that way. If we show up anywhere like our form of the past 2 years then we have a chance....but it is a BIG IF.

How come people keep calling him McKindless? McKinless is a very unusual name. There were 14 of them in the whole of Ireland in the 1901 census, all from the western Lough shore. I think the name originally was McCandless.

I will watch the game on TV, I have some Mayo ancestry but have never been in that county before. I would have many 3rd cousins in west Mayo.

Mayo are big at Midfield  and we need McAvoy and Bradley to crowd this area along with Glass and Rodgers.Last day out we had Mayo ate alive, been 11 up early in the 2nd half. 3 months later, different ball game but we got the strength for a win.

Blowitupref

Mayo's record in the All Ireland series in MacHale Park reads played ten and won ten, seven of the wins was against Ulster opposition including Derry in 2017 that went to extra time.

Mickey Harte managed teams against Mayo in MacHale Park league and championship. P9 W6 D2 L1. One loss was as Louth manager last year 0-14 to 1-10.

Is the ref going to finally blow his whistle?... No, he's going to blow his nose

Why would that wind you up? It's just opinions based on what people have been seeing. Two months ago Derry were being hyped up as AI contenders based on what people had seen. If you go down to Castlebar and beat Mayo, the big headlines will be "Derry are back" and how no one will want them in the quarter final! That's the nature of sport. At the very worst, Derry can take the perceived dismissals and use them for motivation, but you must admit that Derry have a lot to prove and Mayo are a tough, established Div 1 level side.

Confident the players will put in a serious shift and put it up to Mayo. Tbh, even if we were firing on all cylinders, playing Mayo down in Castlebar would be a serious challenge with only a kick of a ball in it.
I'd start an extra 'defender' and keep the game as close as possible. Mayo come out of the blocks quickly (which they don't often do) we could be in bother. Mayo usually like to treat their fans to a, stressful swashbuckling finale reeling in the opposition. This could be a real clinker of a game

21 hours extra rest and a 4 hour journey, probably no great advantage.
