David Bowie - 1 Song

Starman from Top of the Pops 1972.  I must have missed Space Oddity, this is my first memory of Bowie.  Great song to play on the acoustic guitar  - honourable mention of bass player Trevor Bolder's sideburns/hair.

I have a special admiration for the multi-instrumentalists such as Grohl and Jonny Greenwood.

Bowie started on the Sax apparently.

I have to say, I actually don't know 1 song of David Bowie. If someone started singing one I might know it to hear it, but I wouldn't know it is Bowie. Actually the only song I know by him is the Little Drummer Boy duet with Bing Crosby

I know the Beatles I have a pile of their albums. My music collection ranges from 60s stuff, through Iron Maiden and MEtallica, through to Classical, Rock, and Irish Folk. I just never bothered with Bowie. Maybe I'll try now, but I seriously couldn't even hum one of his songs. I've heard the names, but they mean nothing to me.

Back in the day  I was driving the Ring of Kerry with herself.  It had rained all weekend so we spent a lot of time in the car, listening all the time to my music (apparently).

Somewhere around Moll's Gap herself lost the rag and pegged my Best of Bowie cassette (younger folk can google)  out the window.

Song that was playing at the time was "Absolute Beginners" so that one stands out for me since. 

We actually listened to it the other evening after hearing the news.  A good version from BBC archives.

The track that stands out in my memory is Five Years  from the R&F of ZS , not that it's Bowie's best track but
it was the stand out Bowie song from secondary school in 1973/74 amongst  friends. One that was easy to strum a guitar to,  that was sung at drink ins, smoke ins and what not, good lyrics, languid  song, that gradually built up to a prolonged all in chorus.
