Corporal punishment in schools

Just saw some people on another thread saying they'd bring it back.

My memories of corporal punishment are of it being used the most by the least competent teachers.  The better teachers could shut up a classroom full of teenagers with just one look, no need to hit anyone.  The best teachers of all had earned the respect of the pupils by being good at their jobs, and for the most heinous offenders there were plenty of other sanctions that could be taken against them.

Of the three schools I went to, the strap was used heavily in one of them, and that was the most violent school of all.  The mentality of the pupils there was that if you thought somebody did something wrong, you had the right to hit them. I wonder where they got that message from.

I'm with you on this one, Eamonn.  Teachers ought to be about curtailing bullying, not being bullies themselves.  I got the strap the odd time myself, a thoroughly pointless exercise.  I was a good student.  If anything, far from making me a better student, it could have had the adverse effect and made me hate school.

Got whacked acoss fingers very hard with cane at primary school a few times which was very sore and even brutal at such a young age.Definitely did induce good behaviour.

Personally I wouldn't hit anyone smaller than me (that means most people on the planet) unless they are teachers.
But they are such cowards when confronted, you really just have to turn a deaf ear to their squealing and grab them by the lapels.
Usually you don't need to do anything more, they'll get the message, they're such cowards behind their condescending bluster.
If you have to hit them, one blow is usually enough.

There was a history teacher in our school that was renowned for beating the crap out of pupils. He had to avoid all pupils in the street in later years because it turns out he was a short-ass who wasn't so cocky when faced with somebody his own size or bigger. They reckon he would get his head kicked in regularly because when the lads grew up they never forgot.

Corporal punishment could never be re-introduced because of the discipline shift from teacher-led to parent-driven. A teacher is now accountable to the whims and wishes of a parent in almost every facet of their child's education. Too right you may say.

Not at all, I excelled despite the interference of teachers and their assumptions about my intelligence levels.
