The Irish History Podcast does a good series on this on Spotify. Fin Dwyer is the lad who does them. Loads of other interesting ones as well

Why are soccer referees so dramatic in what they do? Screams attention seeking or insecurity. Just ref the game and stop trying to be noticed

Was Hardstation the lad with Shane MacGowan as his profile pic? If it was, they were one of the best posters on this forum

A Pair of Brown Eyes (the version with Cathal Hayden on fiddle)

Smoke an Strong Whiskey (Live in Dublin 2006)

Nancy Spain (Live at the Point)

An incredible musician and story teller that it has been a privilege to grow up and listen to. History I wouldn't have known only for songs like Duffy's Cut or Hattie Carrol. As well as the funny stuff like Joxer, Weekend in Amsterdam or 50 other songs he sang like that. Ballads, humour, trad, protest, he has it all and I'll happily listen to him for the rest of my life and not be tired listening to anything he sings.

You can't make that argument at all. Four lads were one shot back on -10. Henley finished 66-68. Hatton shot 66 twice.

All I'm saying is that there would have been a bigger gap from 2nd to the rest if the two of them had played their usual standard. I don't think it's an out there thing to say. Take out the brain fart double bogies and Rory is on at least -14. Scheffler probably left 2 or 3 shots behind him as well.

Hatton started the 4th round 7 back so probably played freely rather than feeling pressure. Felt bad for Henley, he couldn't buy a putt on the back 9.

McIlroy was -12 after two rounds and even par for the last two and won.

Scheffler was even par after two rounds and then went -11 for the last 36 holes and came second.

If they had even played 3 good rounds each there would have been a big gap to the pack, never mind four good rounds.

Glad they didn't as it made for a better Sunday with all the drama. Some achievement to go back to back and as usual should be in the mix for the rest of them.

So is the "process of the catch" taking it in,keeping control of it and then avoiding any tackle or strip that dislodges it before a knee or elbow hits the ground?

Looked like he caught it clean enough, then hit the ground and as McMillan rolled over him, he stripped the ball out.

I was thinking that watching it, surely he had it in his hands when his knee hit the ground so it's a complete pass. What does he have to do to have it considered complete?

Quote from: Truthsayer on January 15, 2026, 10:58:11 PMIt doesn't outrage me at all but 'them' is not a person's name..
Them is a pronoun that refers to more than one person... how can one person be 'them'?
With it all I mean for practical reasons not that religious fundamentalism?
Teacher pointing at students: 'you-you-you and them, stand up!'

Hypothetically if someone drives into you and you don't know anything about them yet, you would be right in saying "they drove into me, the damage to my car was done by them".

Quote from: Rawhide on January 15, 2026, 03:35:20 PMI haven't a problem calling someone by their chosen name, but a pronoun such as 'them' when it is a singular person in front of me, no way.

Why? What difference does it make to you? I don't understand the reason someone would choose pronouns for themselves but who am I to say they shouldn't just because I am content with how I'm addressed? And if using a different word makes life easier for them and makes sh1te all difference to me, why would I choose to not do that?

Quote from: tonto1888 on November 19, 2025, 01:41:35 PMdo you not need some level of irish to teach in the south?

At primary level, yes.  If you were educated outside the 26 counties you can get up to 5 years to bring yourself up to the required level.

At secondary level, generally no.  Unless of course you are employed to teach Irish, teach in a Gaelscoil, or a school in a Gaeltacht area where Irish is the first language.  So if you teach Physics in a secondary school outside the Gaeltacht, there's no requirement to have any proficiency in Irish.
So then what way would schools be set up in a UI? Do you keep Irish as a mandatory subject even though the majority in the North wouldn't have the level to teach it, or do you leave it to the individual school to decide whether to take it on or not and remove it as a qualification? Which curriculum gets followed or does it need a whole new one? And how do you set up the GCSE / A-Level / Leaving cert? Let the current year groups run with what they are doing and start the new first years on the new system?

Be interesting to see how it all works out but you would imagine identity, flags and anthems will be talked about more

Stuff like this is what I've always wondered about in a UI. Would someone with a law, medical or teaching qualification from Queen's or UU be able to work / practice in a new UI. Similar with qualifications gained in the Republic, how would they reconcile which system is the "right" one to keep?

This might be as good as the sandwiches thread. A fantastic body of research for the good of others.

Sausage roll wrapped in a slice of buttered bread, sauce of your own choosing.

Egg and onion or a tuna sandwich but only if they are triangles. Can be a bit windy the next day is the only draw back.

Left over roast chicken and stuffing, heated in buttered bread.

Getting hungry now
