GAA Discussion / GAA opt against mandatory screening
November 17, 2006, 03:39:33 PM
QuoteThe GAA has decided against introducing mandatory screening of inter-county players, despite the fact that some may be at risk to sudden cardiac death.

Instead, the special committee set up to decide on the matter will recommend to the Management Committee that testing 600 players – a cross-section of county senior and minor hurlers and footballers – is a better starting point. Screening is mandatory in both the FAI and IRFU and several county boards have privately screened their county teams.

The decision has been met with disappointment by those who have campaigning heavily for blanket screening of all inter-county squads since the tragic death of Tyrone captain Cormac McAnallen in March 2004.

McAnallen's family has lobbied passionately since his death for regularized screening and has suggested that a mobile screening unit could help solve any logistical problems. The national Sudden Cardiac Death Taskforce has recommended that all senior inter-county players should be screened for Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS).

So what's going on with that blind girl Ann? Something fishy about her. It is as if she is trying to remove Bree from her current family and friends and make her the replacement? Why? What's going on? She's a dangerous sort that one.

What do we reckon about the hot wee blind one? I think she's going to be the cause of a vicious love triangle involving the Breezer and Zeke!

Before you get over excited, she's only 13

What are the grounds like at Lisnaskea? I am going to the Greencastle game on Sunday and was wondering if the grounds are suitable for a wheelchair.

Anyone been? Anyone know?

It's all over. The long distance relationship was too far for them. Joe's letters and phone calls became less and less frequent, so they both decided to call it a day.

That's a fair enough point passedit. Greencastle wouldn't really have the same problems has clubs from bigger towns and cities.

I would say you would be best contacting the BBC is highlighting this with them. Not in a "why us" fashion, but just to say it was very unbalanced and makes it difficult for your club and other clubs to promote themselves.

I hate to break it to you lads, but you're getting as bad as the OWCers and their "Fight back thread"

I really couldn't give to flying f**ks what Noel said about the game. It doesn't affect what I think of the game, what other gaa think of the game and any sensible non-gaa fan thinks of the game.

We are all getting tarred with the one brush, by the actions of a few.

Tyrone / TeamTalk All Star Nominations List
November 13, 2006, 07:25:15 PM
A total of fifty players will be in the running for Tyrone GAA All-Star awards at the third annual Teamtalk Magazine Gala Banquet in the Great Northern Hotel in Bundoran on Friday 8th December.

Following weeks of voting, the list of contenders for places on the 2006 All-Star club football team has been whittled down to fifty names representing 22 different clubs.

The players shortlisted will be present at the banquet for the announcement of the 2006 Tyrone All-Star team as well as the senior, intermediate and junior footballer of the year award winners.

A selection of the nominees will also be in contention for the 'young club footballer of the year' and 'young achiever of the year' awards.

County champions Errigal Ciaran have seven players included on the shortlist for the All-Star team, while county finalists Carrickmore and newly crowned league champions Dromore each have five nominees.

Senior championship semi-finalists Coalisland and league runners-up Donaghmore both have three representatives on the nominees list, as do intermediate champions Stewartstown.

Ardboe, Omagh, Strabane and five clubs who earned promotion in 2006 - Galbally, Killeeshil, Derrylaughan, Greencastle and Brocagh – all have two names in contention for All-Star awards. And a further eight clubs have one player in the running for an award.

The list of fifty nominees includes five players who won an All-Star award for the first time last year – Ciaran McAleer, Cormac McGinley, Paul Quinn, Des Tracey and Justin McMahon – and three players who were members of the inaugural team two years ago, namely Ronan McGarrity, Gabriel McCallan and Fabian O'Neill.

Carrickmore goalkeeper Plunkett McCallan has actually made the team in each of the last two years and is in contention for a third successive All-Star award.

The latest list of All-Star nominees has been compiled from the huge number of votes submitted by clubs, journalists and the general public over the last six weeks. Another round of voting for both the team and individual awards is now underway and the final deadline is Friday 1st December.

Votes can be e-mailed to editor@teamtalkmag.com, posted to Teamtalk Magazine (51 Gortin Road, Omagh, BT79 7HZ), or phoned in to 02882251590.

There is a limited number of tickets still available for the All-Star Gala Banquet on 8th December. To apply for tickets please contact Edele as soon as possible by telephone or e-mail (edele@thegame.ie)
