Politicians in Northern Ireland have strongly condemned an over night graffiti attack on a GAA premises at Ballyhegan, Co Armagh.  The attack comes after a number of attacks on Orange Halls in the greater North Armagh area in recent months.  The graffiti said, 'stop burning orange halls.'

Dominic Bradley MLA of the SDLP condemned the attack saying, "Those who attack community facilities be they GAA Halls, Orange Halls or any other venues have nothing to offer the future of this country.  In recent months we have seen a large number of attacks on Orange Halls and we were always fearful that there would be some form of perceived retaliation on a GAA Hall.  These attacks, from what ever quarter they come from, are completely wrong and deplorable.  They need to stop and stop immediately; nothing has been or ever will be gained by attacking community venues."

Local SDLP Councillor John Campbell also condemned those responsible saying, "I utterly and totally condemn those responsible for the attacks on Ballyhegan GFC Grounds.  Those who have penned this graffiti are cowards and there is and can be no justification for linking the attack on orange halls to GAA facilities.  The people involved in the GAA in Ballyhegan and indeed throughout the length and breath of this island are equally as sickened by the attacks on Orange Halls as they are on the GAA's own facilities.

"This is a very progressive community were everyone gets on well with each other, no matter what their religion is.  This attack on Ballyhegan grounds is completely wrong and those who carried out this act, I am very sure have no support in the community they perceive to represent in this area.  Just as those who attacked this hall, those who attack Orange Halls have no support what so ever in this community.

"I would appeal for anyone with any information on this or any of the other attacks to contact police to help stop those responsible for these pathetic, sectarian attacks on our communities."

thought those days were in the past.  :(

Sligo to be honoured by soccer team
10 August 2007

Connacht champions Sligo can begin their celebrations in true style following the defeat to Cork in the All-Ireland quarterfinal and one of the first functions Tommy Breheny's charges are to attend is being organised by Sligo Rovers FC.

For years there may have been conflict between the two sports on a nationwide scale but this latest venture is a sign of the times as members of the county team and backroom staff has been invited to Rovers' home game against Bray Wanderers on Saturday night.

During half time of the match, Breheny, selector John Kent and county board chairman John Murphy will receive a memento in recognition of the Connacht final win, the county's first in 32 years.

Rovers chairman Michael Toolan believes that the success of the county footballers in the Connacht campaign is a boost to all sports in the region.

"I have always been of the opinion that Sligo rovers should recognise any sporting achievement within our county, no matter what field or code," he said.

"This is one certainly worthy of recognition. We said we would do it at the earliest possible opportunity and we are hoping that Saturday gives us that opportunity

Saturday 30 June

Tommy Murphy Cup - Preliminary Round

Kilkenny v Antrim, Nowlan Park, 3.00

Tommy Murphy Cup - Round 1

Waterford v Carlow, Dungarvan, 7.00

Wicklow v Offaly, Aughrim, 7.00

Tipperary v Clare, Ardfinnan, 7.00

London v Kilkenny or Antrim, Ruislip, 3.00

You would think a fairly easy path for Antrim, cant see Kilkenny or London troubling them
all the rest of the games are up for grabs in my opinion.
Id have said before the draw Offaly to win the competition without that much trouble, but a trip to Aughrim is never easy,
Waterford with Home advantage should beat Carlow
Tipp are the only team this year i havent seen,i missed, the highlights against Cork.
so cant really call their game with Clare.

Thoughts?

Police Service to make history
20 May 2007

The Police Service of Northern Ireland will make history next week when their team of Gaelic footballers takes part in an official GAA competition for the first time.

The PSNI side will take part in the Antrim Inter-Firms League on Thursday next.

"This was first muted when Sean Kelly was GAA president and it has taken quite a bit of time to put the arrangements in place," said Superintendent Gerry Murray.

"There is no doubt that the new political dispensation has made this more possible than would have been the case.

"The GAA and the Ulster Council have been very supportive.

"A number of the PSNI players are also lining out with their clubs and we have played a number of challenge games.

"But the opposition sides understandably wanted to keep things discreet."

whats the opinions of those from the North on this?

Farrell calls for cowboys to be rooted out
29 April 2007

Top Meath football coach and current Royal County selector Dudley Farrell has called for it to be mandatory for anyone involved in GAA coaching to have an officially recognised qualification.

Farrell, one of three full-time coaches in the Royal County, says there are a lot of "cowboy coaches" operating within the Association.

"Not having proper people over these teams, that has to be rectified," says Farrell.

"We are happy with the management of most of the teams here now. I think we have to go down the road where anyone involved in coaching in the GAA must have a qualification.

"There are a lot of cowboy coaches out there. I've seen coaches sending lads on laps and laps and they are a health hazard.

whats everyones opinion on this? id support it,with a hell of alot of coaches at Senior Level getting anywere between 85 to 100 Euro per session,  Ive seen coaches who didnt have a clue over the years alright.

Deise land Model scalp
04 February 2007

Waterford produced the performance of the day when they shocked Wexford in Division 2B of the NFL despite having a penalty saved and hitting the woodwork.

Waterford 2-13
Wexford 1-12

The Munster side's last league game saw them beat Cavan in Breffni Park and they continued that form with a deserved win over the 2005 league finalists.

The visitors hit three quick points and looked like they might stroll home but Waterford quickly grabbed a footing in the game and took the lead when Andrew Hubbard fired home a goal.

Wexford responded with a Redmond Barry goal to lead by 1-6 to 1-5 at the break.

The second half was controlled by John Kiely's men as they outscored their illustrious opponents by 1-8 to 0-6 with the goal coming from Brian Wall.

The winning margin could indeed have been greater but for a fantastic penalty save from Wexford's 'keeper Alan Masterston and the fact that Waterford saw another goal bound shot hit the woodwork late on.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After taking the scalp of Cavan last year...and running Kerry close in the Munster Championship....
Another great result....over the last 15 years Clare,Limerick and Tipp have all improved and contested Munster Finals...
It may take another year or two..but i think Waterford are going that same way....
Gary Hurney is one of the most underrated players in the country, and i dont think he was even playing yesterday.
Opinions?
