It's all about culture. Unfortunately the culture isn't really in north Derry and Derry City. Just the way it is. Was the same 30 years ago, outwith a few clubs, and the gap is only widening.

I raised the point initially as two south Derry clubs in the intermediate final was a strange one to me. Doesn't happen too often.

But it does raise the point in terms of Derry GAA overall. Derry GAA need as many good inter-county players as possible. Even if they got five from north Derry/Derry city, it'd be a start. Huge scope of ground and Derry GAA should be getting more out of these clubs i.e. intermediate and junior. Surely there must be two players from junior clubs who potentially are inter-county panellists?

I heard St.Columb's College are playing 'D' football this year.

What competition?

Is the Cathair Dhoire MacRory team not still in business? Or has that amalgamation fell by the by wayside?

That experiment was kicked to touch by the traditional grammar schools in the Ulster Colleges council. Everything was ok until on of the amalgamations had the temerity to actually reach a final and nearly win the thing...what a joke.

Ok. Didn't know that. I thought it was an annual GAA support plan for the city?

When did they reach the MacRory Final?

Well why has Dungiven fell awat so badly. When i played underage they won the North Derry under 16 championship every year nearly. In the 80's and 90's they were one of the Strongest teams in Derry, They good minor team 2yrs ago, but dropped off badly in Derry past 20yrs, any particular reason so?

Since it moved to All-County, they don't get an automatic place in final I'd say.

Bit like Ulster inter-county hurling teams getting into an All-Ireland semi-final on an annual basis all those years ago.

Wildweasel74

Actually on about the Dungiven Senior team past 20yrs

See there on lookout for new management also

Only 16 teams can compete at Senior, and some would argue that is 4 more than should be in the grade. If all these north Derry teams pushed on into senior we would then have to complain that some traditional south Derry teams have let themselves slide and fallen to Intermediate.
3 north Derry sides of 16 competed at A1 Minor, 1 got to the quarter final. Under 16, 0 out of 1 of the 16 got to the A1 QF. Underage teams will be able to compete if they have sufficient numbers playing. What then makes them push on is usually having a couple of families with great players around the same age. That can then feed into the senior team and with a bit of luck they get the right blend of experience, youth and maybe a generational talent coming together at the same time.
The issue is replacing those players if the playing numbers aren't sufficient as Coleraine and Glenullin have previously found out. Being north or south of the county doesn't have much to do with whether the correct circumstance develop to produce a good GAA team.

The McRory should never have allowed amalgamations, if they want them create a separate tournament in which they can compete against each other. It isn't GO Games were everyone should get a chance and develop.

We've been in 4 of the last 5 minor finals so there is talent there. We seem to produce a lot of good players with decent underage careers but very few top level players that it takes to win a championship. It's been about 12 years since a Dungiven player played Derry, and other than Kevin Johnston briefly rejoining a few years ago we haven't had a player on the county squad in that time.

imo, the positives of the amalgamated teams outweigh the negatives.

South Derry is the hotbed of football, no one can disagree with that, but if the plan is to keep the status quo , fine, but if the plan is to, whatever way we can, improve football levels county wide, then amalgamated teams playing in the top tier of schools football is a no brainer. Antrim clubs have really benefitted from the 2 big South Derry schools in the last 10 years

St pat's beat a South Donegal amalgamation 2 years ago in the final in Celtic Park.
