Four in 10 SF voters believe party is failing on Casement
LUCIDTALK POLL: FIGURES ALSO SHOW SINN FEIN'S POPULARITY HAS FALLEN TO A FIVE-YEAR LOW
SUZANNE BREEN
Four in 10 Sinn Féin voters believe the reported significant downscaling of Casement Park's redevelopment is a major political failure for the party.
In a new LucidTalk poll for the Belfast Telegraph, two-thirds of all voters say the revision of the plans for the stadium in west Belfast (right) — which will see a much smaller capacity than the previously-planned 34,000 seats — represents a significant setback for Michelle O'Neill's party.
That view is shared across the political divide with 82pc of SDLP; 81pc of DUP; 78pc of UUP; 70pc of TUV and 52pc of Alliance voters also believing that it's a serious political blow for Sinn Féin.
Young people are the most likely to see the reported downscaling of the project as a big political failure for the party, with 73pc of those aged 18-34 holding that view.
Men are also more likely to judge the party harshly over Casement, with 73pc compared to 53pc of women believing it has failed on the issue.
The findings come after the LucidTalk poll suggested that Sinn Féin has fallen to a new five-year poll low, dropping to 22pc — which is two points down on April and seven points down on its 2022 Assembly election performance.
Does this mean 6 in 10 Sinn Fein voters believe they aren't failing on Casement?
That would be very impressive levels of blind loyalty.
Or was there a 'Don't Know' option?
Maybe acknowledging that theres more than SF at fault?

SF failed in expectation management. They should build Casement in stages.

West Belfast holding Shinners to account?

More likely Mayo will do 7 in a row

WTF?!?

Its got nothing to do with Sinn Fein.

The Ulster Council f**ked it up in multiple ways from the start.

Very little to do with Sinn Fein (saying that as someone who doesn't think Sinn Fein are particularly good - but they are relatively blameless here.)

Why was this so bad? It is not as if Ulster lacks capacity; there are many clubs who get all sorts of things built, Peter Quinn played a role in getting Croke Park rebuilt, and there are many GAA people in the construction business. In the 1950s, Antrim built Casement in the first place, which must have required some organisation. What has gone wrong? Has the GAA been contaminated with the generally useless political culture in the 6 counties?

Since Croker was redone there has been a series very poor decisions and delivery on stadium projects. Castle bar and Limerick are huge white elephants, PuC an unmitigated disaster, Tallaght and Rathcoole and so on. Even successful ones like (so far) Louth had a stink.

I can only assume it was entrusted to bullshitters who can look slick with powerpoints and interview well being full of their own importance - and interviewed by people, with the best will in the world, aren't likely to be able to critically analyse any technical answers.

Puc and Castlebar might be over the top, but they are actually built. Likewise, Louth are getting the job done.

Why then did the interview committee not contain at least one person of a GAA background with construction experience, as mentioned above? What has been learned from this?

The money for PuC is still not all accounted for. Croker publically told Louth to stop work.

My point is the GAA in general has gotten shite at big projects recently.

The problem with Cork stada, its a good stadium but situated in a heavy traffic location to get out to from the North side. Then located in a former industrial area along the river with lack pubs, shops etc. What was the Business case to jusify it unless they had Multi concerts, Munster finals. Steady championship games. There no sensible business return in this project. Casement park in the same boat.

No, the problem is it ran 35% over budget and put the Cork county board 30m in debt. And Croke Park actually praised them saying that it 'wasn't necessarily a bad outcome'.

If the GAA was a private company it would have gone bust.

But it's not. Thankfully we haven't totally sold our soul for € yet although Burns is trying his best with Allianz.
