General discussion / The FA Cup and the BBC
January 05, 2008, 08:21:05 AM
Is it just me being a grumpy old man or is anyone else pissed off at the way BBC over-hype the FA Cup. I usually listen to 5 Live and every time I've had the fecking radio on the week it's been Magic of the cup this and magic of the cup that.

Last night they had a 4 hour programme where a load of has beens held a love in and all agreed the the FA cup is the greatest competition in the world and the players really rate it.  We all know the 3 premiership or championship points are more important to most managers and players. Who are they trying to kid? Is it just because it's the only live club soccer they get to show now?

General discussion / IT help please.
December 26, 2007, 04:16:15 PM
I've a problem with my computer. I can't get access to the control panel to delete programmes etc. I get a message saying "This operation has cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Contact system administrator."

As far as I know I am the system administrator! How can I give myself permission to access the control panel. I used to be able to get to it but a few months ago it disappeared from the start up menu. Can anybody help?

General discussion / Tossers at BBC Radio 1 make u-turn!
December 18, 2007, 11:39:47 PM
This is hard to believe but true. I hate say it but it really is political correctness gone mad!

Here's the original live version.

Radio 1 backs down in Pogues row

BBC Radio 1 has said it will allow the Pogues' Fairytale of New York to be played on the station uncut, after criticism of a decision to censor it.
The words "slut" and "f**got" had been dubbed out from the 20-year-old festive hit by station executives.

But after a day of criticism from listeners, the band, and the mother of singer Kirsty MacColl, they changed their minds.

Controller Andy Parfitt said the original decision was "wrong".

The BBC had said that an edited version would be played because "some members of the audience might find it offensive".

'Creative freedom'

But sister station Radio 2 said it would play the track uncut, and Mr Parfitt subsequently said that after "careful consideration", the ban on the uncut version of the song would be lifted.

"Radio 1 does not play homophobic lyrics or condone bullying of any kind," he said.

"It is not always easy to get this right, mindful of our responsibility to our young audience. The unedited version will be played from now on.

"While we would never condone prejudice of any kind, we know our audiences are smart enough to distinguish between maliciousness and creative freedom. In the context of this song, I do not feel that there is any negative intent behind the use of the words, hence the reversal of the decision."

He told BBC News 24 the decision to edit the song had been made "some months ago" as part of a review of older records played on the station.

MacColl, who was killed by a speedboat off the coast of Mexico in 2000, brands Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan "you sc**bag, you maggot, you cheap lousy f**got" in the song, which reached number two when it was first released.

A spokesman for the Pogues, who first formed in 1982 and reunited in 2001 after a five-year break, said they "found it amusing that a song that has been one of the best-loved Christmas tunes should suddenly have been deemed offensive".

Radio 1 listeners also criticised the ban on Newsbeat's website.

However, veteran gay rights activist Peter Tatchell said Radio 1's original actions were right.

"The word f**got is being sung as an insult, alongside sc**bag and maggot. In this abusive context it is unacceptable," he said.

GAA Discussion / Antrim Footballers call off strike!
November 09, 2007, 08:04:13 PM
In a move timed to coincide with the GPA announcement on their strike ballot, Antrim footballers have today called off their long running strike.

After 40 year of refusing to compete properly in the Ulster Senior Football Championship, the players have decided to get back to playing and training.

A spokesman for the players - Spide McGourty explained " We took a vote last night in the Whitefort so we did and voted to go back. With everybody else on strike we reckon we have a great chance next year. The vote was anonymous so it was".

Following the surprise move, McGranaghan's bookmakers have installed Antrim as 9th favorites for the 2008 Ulster SFC.

Fixtures:

Sunday 14th October:

Ulster Senior Hurling Club Championship Semi Final:

Dunloy (Antrim) v Ballycran (Down) at Casement Park (3.30pm)
Referee: Martin Mulholland (Derry)

Dunloy will have far too much experience for a young Ballycran.

Ulster Intermediate Hurling Club Championship Semi Finals:
Cushendun (Antrim) v Liatroim (Down) at Casement Park (1.45pm)
Referee: Tiernach Mahon (Fermanagh)

Cushendun should be too strong for Liatroim.

Keady (Armagh) v Eire Og Carrickmore(Tyrone) at Maghera (2.00pm)
Referee: Tommy Mc Intyre (Antrim)

Haven't seen these two so I've no idea.

Ulster Junior Hurling Club Championship Semi Finals:
Naomh Colmcille (Tyrone) v Armoy (Antrim) at Maghera (12.15pm)
Referee: Brendan Sweeney (Cavan)

Armoy were a better team than Naomh Colmcille when we played them in the Ulster league so i'd expect them to get through to the final

GAA Discussion / Playing Ringers
October 04, 2007, 09:25:35 PM
A good few years ago Queen's University were hosting the Sigerson Cup final and to enhance their chances of winning they asked a couple of very good u21s playing for Belfast clubs to line out for them.
One of the lads asked to help out was the brilliant St John's forward known as Cocker Murray. Cocker agreed to play and lined out at top of the right. Before he went on to the field in the final he got a bit worried and asked the coach "I'm not at Queen's what will I say if they think I'm a ringer"? The coach told him to tell them he was a student studying mathematics.

15 minutes into the game Cocker had scored 1-04 and the UCC where concerned he was a ringer. They changed markers and the new lad introducted himself to Cocker with a shoulder that would have sank the Titanic - even if it had been built properly. Under instructions from the sideline he says - "Are you at Queen's"? "I am" replies Cocker. "So what are you studying"? says the UCC man.
"Sums"! replies Cocker.

Justin McCarthy has indicated that he wants to stay with Waterford and have another go at an All Ireland. The County Board are expected to approve his appointment next week.
He's a great enthusiastic coach and I wish him all the best for next year but I think this Waterford team have missed the boat as far as an All Ireland is concerned. Under the new SHC arrangements they'll have a much harder run to the final than Kilkenny whether they win Munster or not. It's hard to see past Kilkenny under these new arrangements.

General discussion / Ungrateful bollock!
September 25, 2007, 09:03:49 PM
I called into the local tonight after training the u16s. I'll add I was on the bike so that Aristotle Flynn doesn't lecture me on the evils of drink drinking!

Had a couple of pints and as I was leaving I noticed that a local plumber had left the lights on on his van. I had the boy's number because he had done work for me in the past. So I gives him a ring and I tell him he's left his lights on.

I get the response "It's my fuckin van & I'll leave the lights on any time I want!".

GAA Discussion / Road to be named after GAA star
July 26, 2007, 07:28:44 AM
Given the place the GAA has in Irish heritage you would think this sort of thing would be more common.

I know that Cork has the Jack Lynch Tunnel and there's the Ring Road in Ballymena.

Can anybody come up with examples form other Counties?
