Whats the story with the spoiled votes??? I presume that was a deliberate act and it wasnt 6,171 people getting confused with a YES/NO choice.

A great victory for freedom lovers and small government. Our ancestors that fought for freedom for centuries would turn in their graves at a yes result. I'm afraid it will be short lived as the crooks in power will not give up until they get what they want just as they did with Traite De Nice.

I wonder how much or what those FG and FF political lap dogs were offered if they had gotten the EU Constitution ratified?  The time is ripe to find a solution to get rid of this one party system and Sin Fein and their ilk is not the answer.

Yesterday was so close to becoming one of the worst days in Irish history, we must not give them the chance again. There should have been a stipulation, whatever the result no more referendums on the subject or camouflaged subjects.

Just saw him with Brian "Soft Focus Interview" Dobson. Seems perturbed that middle management will have to report back to Brussels without the job being done. Unlike a decent democrat like Eamon Gilmore, Cowen was not able to rule "in or out, up or down" going back to the people again for a second referendum. I hear the French (government that is) are incandescent, and say we must revote. Also a German CD MEP tried to use the analogy of the Euro 2008 championships to explain how we couldn't decide not to play ball. Of course the interviewer wasn't sharp enough to ask would Germany expect a replay just because they didn't like the result of the Croatia game the other night? Comparison to soccer are quite ridiculous. Anyway, looks like interesting times ahead.

Aye Hardy, as I said in my first post after the result was inevitable - this is not a time for celebration. We need to start asking the questions it has raised. Including how far apart are those in control of the EU from the people of the EU and how far apart are the mainstream party's in Ireland (re the EU and Globalisation) to the citizens of Ireland.

Most spoiled votes are just filled out wrong. If you put a tick in a box rather than an X it can be deemed spoiled. If you make the wrong one and try to change it can be deemed to be spoiled. Some people can often be undecided and put an X in both boxes just to exercise their right and spoil the vote. Some people write the words Yes or NO. Some people intentionally spoil by drawing smiley faces or wright comments on their vote thinking someone who cares will read it. The main problem is getting those checking to decide on if it is spoiled or not. Even if you do not fill it in properly but you can clearly see what the voter wants (if they write Yes or NO) it can be counted as a vote but it gets tricky after that and when one is spoiled it must be the same rule for everyone after that. When it goes to a recount those involved with agendas can challenge and spoil anything without an X in the right box.

I think this is great! Look at all the Irish and EU leaders running around like blind mice who have lost their tails Can you picture if it was a Yes and the only fun would be Cowen in a Victory bus heading to Clara for chips and a beer.

Mainstream politicians in south took the electorate for granted. Half the politicians campaigning for the yes vote hadnt a clue what the referndum was actually about.

how do you propose to do this? more talking shops/forums for europe etc? its quite simple really ireland has decided by a big majority it is not in favour of the system for governing europe. this must be respected by the rest of europe and ireland in turn should not stop the rest of europe getting on with it. why should 1% of the eu pop change the eu future? after today the only right course of action is for ireland and the eu to go seperate ways
