You are missing the point here completely. We are saying that these men should not have been allowed to make a clean fortune out of the area without taking responsibilty for the consequences of overpopulation. They bung in as many students as possible into a house without regard for the problems that such overcrowded houses in a tight space cause.

have never found accomodation hard to find around uni. Its just so concentrated and cheap in the holylands its the first port of call for young country bucks who dont know their lisburn road from their stranmillis or botanic

I've never heard such shite. "Overcrowding" causes supposedly educated youngsters to behave like animals. That theory applies to colonies of rats. Third level students should have slightly higher levels of self control.

On second thoughts, rats don't foul their own living quarters.

No the responsibility rests with the Department of Social Development who have allowed the unrestricted redevelopment of housing in the area and permitted the conversions to flats and HMOs. It is well within the gift of the Minister (Margret Ritchie) to solve this problem by restricting the number of HMOs permitted in any given residential street, thereby dispersing the student population throughout the city.

There's even county managers getting in on the act!! One charged me extortionate prices for a hit hole in my second year!!

So the landlords are responsible for the behaviour of grown men/women? It just seems to me that when it is some "of our own" that are out of order there are a multitude of reasons, extenuating circumstances.........

dont be silly.

you buy up a large area of terrace housing (80-90% say). you cram in as many rooms as possible into a house, damn the health and safety. you rent it out to thousands of 18/19 year olds who are living away from home for the first time and will probably only stay a couple of years before being replaced by similar boys and girls

What do you think will happen? they get drunk and make noise. wrong but equally inevitable

when an area is 90% students of course you will have a lot of young people together, a lot of parties and so on. If you are in a mixed area you will have less of this. it's fairly simple

do you really think a more intelligent young fella, drinks and shouts less than the young fella with the trade. A good set of a-levels does not necessarily mean common sense

the damage is done already with the landlords having been allowed to play monopoly with the area. Good luck to finding a solution now!

That's the "why do you let me do it?" argument. Every mentally healthy adult on the planet is responsible for his/her own behaviour. Nodody else is. That's the starting point for civilisation. We're not talking about parties. We're talking about anti-social behaviour that ignores the rights of other people.

Not so. She could pass legislation to restrict the number of HMOs and force landlords to change back or sell up. However this might not go down well with some of the senior members of her party who rent houses in the area.
