St Patricks v Harps

Harps travelled to South Armagh on Sunday last to play the local St Pats side. Harps were hoping to continue their excellent recent run by gaining revenge on the home side after they comprehensively defeated the Harps in the opening fixture of the season.

Both teams fielded significantly weakened sides, but it was Harps who were to be the dominant team of the opening half. St Pats had a wide with their first attempt but soon opened the scoring with a close range fisted point after a free had come back off the post. Harps had a wide from a '50' before Ultan Lennon shot the equaliser with a point after good work by Minnie. Harps were dominating possession and playing some good football, but they were badly undone by their shooting. We had three wides in a row before Minnie gave us the lead with a well taken point and when Kevin Kelly added another point after good work by Philly McKinney, Harps looked set to go on and win. Both sides exchanged wides from frees before emergency full forward Willie McSorley scored a great point from fifty yards. St Pats added a point from a free in a rare attack, but Harps continued to dominate. Jungle McKee's great effort beat the keeper but was brilliantly cleared off the line by a defender. Two further wides followed before Gary McKinney finished a brilliant Harps move with a point. Harps had yet another bad wide although St Pats ended the half with a brief spell of pressure that brought two late points and a shot for goal that went narrowly wide.

Half time, St Patricks 0-04, Harps 0-05.

St Pats started the second half as they had ended the first with pressure that brought an equalising point. Another Harps wide was followed by an excellent Gary McKinney point as we regained the lead. Mark McConville came into the defence for Tommy O'Hagan as St Pats went on a scoring spree that was to win them the game. A well taken point from play was followed by some loose play in our defence that allowed an attacker to gain possession, despite being outnumbered, and shoot to the net from twelve yards. St Pats had the bit between their teeth and soon added two further points. Harps rallied briefly with points from the hard working Gerard McDonagh and Minnie Holmes, but St Pats remained in control with a further point from play. Declan Coulter came in for Kevin Daly and Smackers replaced Gary McKinney as Harps threw everything at the opposition. A high ball into the St Pats' square caused confusion and yet again Harps were unlucky to see a shot beat the keeper but get cleared off the line. St Pats turned the screw further when a bad mistake turned the ball over and the forward pointed with ease. Martin McCoy replaced Harpo but the game was already gone. St Pats added a point from play whilst Harps, despite several chances, could only add a point from a Kevin Kelly free kick.  St Pats punished the Harps wastefulness further with a point from a free, whilst Harps' poor shooting continued to the end when a shot for goal went wide.

Final score, St Patricks 1-12, Harps 0-09.

This was a match that the Harps will look back on with a lot of regrets. We dominated play in the opening half but through poor shooting and some poor decision making we only led by a solitary point at half time. In the second half, some poor defensive errors were punished to the full with the result that the team completely lost its way in the closing quarter and ended up being comprehensively beaten.

The Harps fielded as follows. Dingle Daly, Hugh McSorley, Martin Gill, Tommy O'Hagan (Mark McConville), Chuckie Morris, Jungle McKee, Kevin Daly (Declan Coulter), Kevin Kelly 0-2 (0-1 free), Philly McKinney, Harpo McKenna (Martin McCoy), Minnie Holmes 0-2, Gerard McDonagh 0-1, Ultan Lennon 0-1, Willie McSorley 0-1 and Gary McKinney 0-2 (Smackers McAneney).

Harps v Killeavey

Harps entertained Killeavey at Abbey Park last night, and in what could prove to be a very important result come the end of the season, were soundly beaten by five points.

On a lovely evening for football it was Harps who had the early play and can consider themselves somewhat unfortunate to have a goal disallowed as Paddy Morrison appeared to punch the ball out of the keeper's hands and into the net. Soon after, Philly McKinney opened the Harps' account with a lovely point with the outside of his boot. However disaster soon followed when a long ball into the square was dropped into the path of an inrushing forward who goaled from close range. Harps had hardly time to draw breath when another bad mistake allowed Killeavey in for a point. Ultan Lennon had a wide for us before Killeavey extended their lead with a point from a close in free. Harps were somewhat shell shocked but to be fair they responded well. Kevin Kelly pointed with a free from an acute angle before Harps were denied a goal by a brilliant block from the Killeavey keeper. In the ensuing scramble referee Sam McClatchey gave Harps a penalty and young Ultan Lennon calmly side footed the kick to the net. Killeavey responded well with two points (one from a '50'). Play became scrappy at this stage. Both sides swapped wides before Ultan Lennon was unlucky to miss consecutive free kicks by hitting each upright. Kevin Kelly scored a great point with a long range free. Willie McSorley replaced Smackers McAnaney as half time approached, but it was Killeavey who finished on the attack with points from a free and a close range fisted effort after a good run.

Half time, Harps 1-03, Killeavey 1-06.

Harps made two early changes in the second half with Martin McCoy coming in for the injured Jungle McKee whilst Harpo came in for Gerard McDonagh. Killeavey had early opportunities but put two shots into Johnny Daly's hands. Harps then brought themselves back into the game with a purple patch of scoring that brought three points in a row through Paddy Morrison, Declan Coulter and an Ultan Lennon free. With the sides now level the game was up for grabs and unfortunately it was Killeavey who rose to the challenge.  For the next fifteen minutes Killeavey won every ball around the middle of the field, dominating play and causing Harps endless problems with their running and support play. They scored the next five points in a row and would have had the game wrapped up but for some terrible shooting which included eight wides in this period of the match alone. Harps eventually managed a point when Ultan Lennon first timed a shot over the bar. However from the kick out Killeavey won possession and raced through for a point off the inside of the post. Killeavey's ability to respond quickly to a Harps score was to be a feature for the rest of the game. Harps managed another two points (through Declan Coulter and an Ultan Lennon free) but each time Killeavey responded with a point of their own – the second last point in particular being a fisted point from close in after a brilliant move cut open the Harps' defence. The match finished with Killeavey deserving winners.

Full time Harps 1-09, Killeavey 1-14.

For Harps, this was a damaging defeat in that it pulls the team right back into the relegation zone. Indeed the nature of the loss is what was particularly worrying, as when the match was there to be won, Harps were comprehensively outplayed by the opposition, throughout the pitch.

The Harps lined out as follows; Johnny Daly, Mark McConville, Martin Gill, Kevin Daly, Chuckie Morris, Paddy Grimes, Jungle McKee (Martin McCoy), Smackers McAnaney (Willie McSorley), Philly McKinney 0-1, Declan Coulter 0-2, Minnie Holmes, Gerard McDonagh (Harpo McKenna), Ultan Lennon 1-3 (1-0 penalty, 0-2 frees), Paddy Morrison 0-1 and Kevin Kelly 0-2 (0-2 frees).

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.
