In the 80s we had 24 pubs and 7 small grocery shops, 3 chemists ,1 newsagent,  a small credit union, Ulster Bank and AIB , 3 butchers 3 hairdresseers , a hurling club with a small ground and 1 chip shop. Some of the grocery shops did deliveries out the country.

Now there are 10 pubs, no small groceries , 2 chemists, a sizeable credit union, 2 phone shops, 3 filling stations with food and takeaway and papers, 2 butchers, 5 hairdressers and 8 cafés/restaurants , a huge hurling campus , Tesco and Aldi plus maybe 10 derelict buildings.

Supermarkets tell  you what you think you need.

Truth is , you don't need half the shite  you're buying from them.

Then we have  hoors  like Amazon. Everything available on a whim

Doesn't negate his point though

Not all. The power of money as well.
I think Aldi was in response to low payrises.

Go with a list, buy what you need and walk out the door. The wife (as most are!) is a very efficient shopper whereas I like a dander around the shop and I inevitably buy something non-essential and take twice as long.

Obviously aware of how privileged a position we are to be able to think like this, but life would be incredibly boring if you only bought what you needed.

Do you buy the litre of milk for €1.70 in a small shop or for €1.15 in Lidl, Super Valu, Tesco etc.
Do you drive to the "retail park" with acres of car parking or try to find a spot on a narrow busy street somewhere near a small shop?

We'd have more cupboard space in the house!
