An absolutely dire World Cup. Spain are a pale shadow of the team that won in 2010 who at least knew how to attack. Yamal as the new poster boy of world football says it all really. Full of running but no end product. As much of a footballer as Dijbril Cisse. The 80 mill Barca spunked on Gordon makes sense now, football has become about how fast you can chase down the full back as opposed to your footballing ability.

Argentina too are a desperate squad. Once Paredes and Molina came on it was all over for them. No football there at all.

Spain was far too controlled in possession and organised for Argentina. The game needed Spain to be leading at half time in normal time to get Argentina away from their set tactics of playing physical and doing SFA else.

Spain scored from their 20th shot on goal while it took 117 minutes for Argentina to get shot on goal was such a feeble effort, as for Messi 54 touches and none in the box.

It's not so much a dire World Cup as a dire sport.

Soccer is great fun to play and occasionally can be so entertaining to watch.

But

1. some 40 years on from diving / simulation started to become a thing, football hasn't worked out how to solve the underlying problem that their game actively rewards cheating. This really shouldn't  be difficult to solve.

2. there is an intrinsic culture within the sport that a) a draw is a good result, b) playing for penalties is a tactically astute approach. Given the scoring parameters, this is a difficult problem to solve.

Soccer is great fun to play and occasionally can be so entertaining to watch.

But

1. some 40 years on from diving / simulation started to become a thing, football hasn't worked out how to solve the underlying problem that their game actively rewards cheating. This really shouldn't  be difficult to solve.

2. there is an intrinsic culture within the sport that a) a draw is a good result, b) playing for penalties is a tactically astute approach. Given the scoring parameters, this is a difficult problem to solve.

Gaelic football solved the draw problem with points when the game was about goals in the early years.

Poor game, shame Argentina didn't try to play before going behind it might have been a decent game, absolutely love their dirt and trampiness but Spain by far the better team on the night. Pity for Messi to go out on a whimper but what a career.

With the youth Spain have got be be favourites for next euros.
