That ref was out of his depth.  He even needed VAR to bail him out on the penalty.  There's letting the game go and there's ignoring or not seeing blatant fouls and card offences. The French did well not to retaliate.

I've been involved with Soccer teams on both sides of that coin.
Sometimes you have to drag the opponent down a level.
