Captain Obvious

Monaghan heads will be even more cocky now with the news Enda Smith is out.

No Darragh Canavan on the panel, very surprised as all talk was he'd be back this weekend. Mayo huge favourites now 😉

twohands!!!

If things don't go well for Cork I could see Donegal giving them an almighty thumping. I can see Cork really struggling to get scores, especially if Donegal manage Sherlock like Kerry did as opposed to how Meath did. That Donegal defence looks light years ahead of what Meath offered the last day.

Can't see Westmeath surprising Galway or Kildare surprising Kerry (who look to have most of their big-hitter back in the 26) Likewise Armagh and Louth. Those are the 4 I'd have as pretty much bankers. The remaining 4 games are far more up in the air to my mind.

Looking at the team-sheets that Mayo front 6 has me leaning a bit more towards Tyrone.

Monaghan v Roscommon I'm still humming and hawing over - maybe a slight nod to the Rossies but Smith out is a loss but Monaghan have been so inconsistently yo-yo in games it's hard to give them the nod - look great in patches looked muck in patches.

Leaning Derry at home but not hugely convinced more to do with how badly Meath managed the end of the Cork game. Letting any team who are a man down overtake and beat you down the stretch is a bad sign and I'd say it's worse because it's not really the type of fight-back I'd associate with this Cork football team and the fact that they did it to Meath in both the league and championship is a massive red flag.

Dublin Cavan I don't know - both teams going through the motions a bit, maybe Brennan back might favour Dublin. All depends on how the last of the old lads perform for them.

Poor effort even without the winkie. He's a good player but he's hardly in the category of being essential for Tyrone having a chance to win.

He's Tyrone's best player when on form, I am 100% certain of that

Thankfully he is named in the standby panel (#27-30) and with the antics Malachy O'Rourke pulls he probably will be on the bench come Sunday. I'd give Geezer that, the named team plays most of the time, not the waste of time that is the Tyrone starting line up week to week, a complete nonsense carry on

Wouldn't buy in to the yerra boys and the injury crisis in Kerry either - it's only Sean O'Se, Tom O'Sullivan and Shane Ryan not named due to injury. 3 massive players obviously and match fitness a concern for some of the others but at least they're being named to start / on bench - if they start to get some of those 3 back they will be right there come the end of this championship

Darragh's definitely among Tyrone's best when on form but as I said I wouldn't have him in the utterly essential category.

I'd probably have Sean O'Shea and Shane Ryan in Kerry's top three most vital players if they are to retain Sam I think there's a significant drop down in quality to Shane Murphy in goals and I think Seanie is a vital player for those periods in games when the momentum turns against a side and they have to battle. Also he is a key 2 point threat from both play and deadballs.

I don't think the standby panel is released publicly but has to be registered with Croke Park along with the 26. My guess is that the people in Croke Park who see the list will talk and then it gets passed on from person to person. Only time it seems to be mentioned is when there is something significant like a big name/automatic starter if fit is on it and people are talking about a late switch. Although I did hear for one of Kerry's game a while back they only named 3 to the standby panel.

No two ways about it, Enda is a huge loss to us, not even on 26. It may not be realised because results were good in league and Connacht but Mark Dowd lost more players through injury and retirement (some of it injury driven too) than I think any other manager and 5 our team made championship debut this year, and essentially 7 because Lambe and Neary got some gametime under Davy but established themselves this year. So to lose a leader like Enda for a big knockout game away is a huge blow. But Mark has not made one excuse all year, so I won't either. We have to get on with it and I'm hopeful for a hard fought victory. May the best team win, and hope its us.

Ridiculous that Kildare v Kerry isn't on TV when you consider the TG4 cameras will be showing the Kildare v Kerry ladies football match before it at the same venue.

Sure, just keep one of the wide focus cameras rolling unattended and we can use radio Kerry for commentary.

Meath going for midfield aerial dominance if that lineup starts. Might sacrifice a bit of our ground game though. Menton, O'Neill, O'Connor and McBride all tall midfielders.
It won't be the next manager but the one after that Meath will become competitive again - MO'D 2016

Darragh canavan playing is certainly not essiental for Tyrone having a chance of winning vs mayo. But he's without a doubt the best footballer in Tyrone and one of the best in the country so it's not hard to understand that Tyrone would be weaker if he's not playing.

Clifford isn't essential for Kerry to beat Kildare or conaty for Armagh to beat Louth but they would still be weaker without them.

It's a disgrace that all games aren't available to watch live. But because there's only 4 games picked for tv it's understandable that Kerry vs Kildare isn't one of them as the 2b games with Derry vs Meath and Roscommon vs Monaghan are more competitive.
