Gormleys block was ridiculous due to timing, denying McDonnell a likely goal to level the game 2mins from full time in an All Ireland final.

Au-contraire - McKernan shaped to shoot, shimmied, did a very quick turn inside which caused Evans to slip as he reacted to the turn and he still managed to execute the block despite slipping and his momentum going in the opposite direction.

McDonnell's shot was much more telegraphed, no change in direction or pace, just get the ball, take a few steps and whack it. Great block and great athleticism by Gormley, but Evans a level above.

It certainly looks better in slow motion and is a more agile block for sure but context matters. I was at the 2003 final (Laois minors were in the final) and you knew in that split second the match was on the line, it fell to one of the best forwards in the country and Gormley put his body on the line to help his county win their first ever All Ireland against their bitter rivals. It does not get bigger than that.

Evans blocked the ball. Gormley hit the players leg as he was kicking it, so it should have been a 14m free, although this would not have affected the outcome as that passage of play led to a free anyhow.

Conor Gormleys right hand strikes the ball. Yes the angle of his run and dive to get to it follows through but I see no real issue with that. No free and a great block.
