Can we not let players keep some safe options, attmitedly it's a bit of an anti climax if it's youre team who's worked their way that close to goal but I'd far rather see them have the option of taking a point than trying to kick through maybe 3 defenders froma  tight angle. It's like the new kick out, give the keeper the option to take a short kick out it adds a bit of variety

People can complain about the fisted point all they want but it's up to Down to stop them getting to those areas.

I wasn't able to watch the first half in fairness as our club minors were playing. The opposition scored a fisted point in the last 2 minutes to bring it level and my first thought wasn't "Ffs a fisted point get it out of the game there's no skill in it" it was "Ffs they actually worked that really well".

Got the kickout away short when pitch was soaking (keeper showed some balls to do that a point down), didn't panic and worked it up the field, nobody took more than 1 touch until they got in our 45m roughly then they had another 10 handpasses maybe, no touches, movement everywhere, backdoor cut a few steps out from the endline. What would you want the young lad to do? Take on a goal that would be nearly physically impossible? Shoot on his right foot at a narrow angle? Cut back onto his left foot and get blocked down maybe?

Would genuinely like to hear
As the rules stand, the fisted point was the right option. I coach my underage team to take the fisted point for precisely the reasons you outlined.
But, it's not pretty and doesn't add to the spectacle, so I'd be very happy to see the option removed. Let him go for goal or play it across or whatever, either way most neutral spectators would prefer any other option than the no-risk fisted point
It only came in 30yrs ago, not hard to remove it. Anyone recall why it was introduced btw?

The majority of Armagh fisted points is them coming in from tight angles, going for goals are playing it across the square is predictable and easier to snuff out, so why bother.  Against the top teams, you may not get another chance for 15mins if you can't get the ball (Armagh v Kerry last summer, or Down on Sunday).

Funny if McElholm had fisted a point instead of trying for a goal in the Tyrone/Armagh game, Armagh may well have been knocked out that day.

With the introduction of the 2point rule, we are seeing a lot more exciting scores also.  As much as the rules have changed, teams will not be drawn into taking scores where they have as much chance of missing as they do of scoring.
I tend to think of myself as a one man wolfpack...

Everybody digesting the message from the Armagh county board asking their fans not to wreck the place.

Estimator

Armagh to win their next two fixtures by a combined total of +20pts.

Too many getting carried away by Monaghan's comeback rather than Derry's total failure keep the foot on the throat and win the game.

Armagh are a different animal and will win at a canter.

Monaghan 0-19

Monaghan will not be easy beat and have been like that for a long time now. I do still think Armagh will win but the winning margin is anyones guess...Armagh are so unpredictable but the last game v Down was the first in a long time where they kept the throttle down for the whole game.
I'll guess Armagh 2-20 Monaghan 1-18

Hoping we do similar, if we play to our best for 70 minutes we'll beat Monaghan, if we don't it'll be a total dogfight, we've never got anything easy against those huers.

Hopefully no extra time and certainly no fecking penalties. Looking like a nice day in the metropolis of Clones at least.

Quote from: Estimator on April 02, 2026, 11:48:39 AMIt will be a nothing less than a double digit victory for Armagh.

Realistically they should be going out to try and better the 18pt hammering Tyrone give them in 2017.

You do like them double digit estimations, or perhaps your chosen board name is a self-parody.

I can guarantee you there will 100% not be a penalty shoot out on Sunday.

There has to be a replay first.

I would be amazed if Monaghan keep it to 5. If Armagh play poorly maybe but if they click at all they are a way better team than Monaghan.
