Good comeback. Fiji with a lot of persistent head tackles. Ref should have given a yellow.

Ireland messed up a bit there.
You'd need you shredded wheat for that game though.

Such a cheap try to give away to lose. Was it not a knock on too? But having lost their best player, was always going to be a challenge to beat Fiji. They went close.

Capt Pat

Ireland was robbed. Fiji knocked the ball on for the winning try. The ref said he couldn't check it. I don't know why.

So a QF choke who would have thought. They played well apart from 30 seconds in that second half ffs

Do those RTE commentators have first clue of the rules? They are beyond bad.

2 very poor kicks into touch with the chance to gain a lot of territory cost them in the last play. Had we Sexton on the bench for such moments..

Is territory that important in this game when one line break wins it? None of the teams look that interested in territory from kicks... don't get me started on the shambles of drop goals!!

Two defeats in a row tell the tale.

Not good enough.

It was more the 2 penalties they had when time was up. Made hardly any ground with them and meant they had to get a try from in their own half. They'll have regrets about that NZ game but with NZ out as well maybe SA would have beaten Ireland as well.

Ah well we move on - any interesting events from an Ireland point of view on over the weekend?

Has anyone got a breakdown of each Irish athlete by county?

The Belfast Telegraph has a feature on Nordies in the Ireland team.  Wikipedia also lists the Irish team, although it doesn't have full profiles on all competitors.  There's a good few of the Irish team who are not Irish born.  E.g. cyclist Alice Sharpe was born in Germany and grew up in England but qualifies for Ireland.  The Corcoran twins in the canoeing were born in the States but their father represented Ireland previously.

Trivia...Leona Maguire (Golf - Cavan) is a first cousin of Ross Corrigan (Rowing - Fermanagh)

Daniel Wiffen is from Magheralin which geographically (and for GAA purposes) is in Co Down, though it's very close to the Armagh border.

I'm pretty sure Kate O'Connor (she has competed for NI in the Commonwealth Games) is from Newry which would make her Down or Armagh

Rugby boys knocked out before the opening ceremony.
