This is a thread that I have been watching for a while. Why do some people feel the urge to push their views on religion on others?
I think its written in the new testament that Jesus said in summary, love your neighbour as yourself. Love them enough not to push your value system on them.
How can you find proof one way or the other?
It needs to be accepted that our views on God/ creation/ virgin births/ pieces of bread/ condoms are our views and not to be ridiculed. If they are not inciting hatred & violence then what's wrong with believing the earth is a turtle egg or 42 is the answer to the big question?

Well said heganboy. If everyone was to chill to feck out and stop ramming religion down others throats then there would be less problems. Or probably what would actually happen is that they would tell the truth i.e religious conflicts are not about doctrine or Mohammed v JC but usually about money, oil, domination of one ethnic group. Now where have we seen that before?

Totally agree. If someone wants to go the full hog on religion then it should be up to them. Atheists who dogmatically say "there is no god, middle east fairytales etc" are offensive and arrogant. Similarly those that say "you need god in your life" they can f**k off too. It should be up to the individual.

Yes non religys, its the scientific term dont you know! 

That wasnt a comment aimed at you personally nifan, just a general point re these discussions, I find people opposing religion to be more argumentative in these type of debates.

Nope, and I 100% agree that we shouldnt force our religion on people, this is why I am very uncomfortable with missionaries etc.

But many people argueing against religion tend to insult the intelligence of people who do, with broad sweeping statements re brainwashing, thinking for yourselves etc.

I dont necessarily disagree with them either.
I believe, but certainly cant prove god exist and acknowledge I could possibly be wrong, but the patronising stuff is what annoys me.

This thread has turned fierce philosophical...which is especially discomforting seeing as how it started out with Orange Halls! And we've reached the classic conundrum...religion is based and relies upon faith, not knowledge. Whereas non-believers (atheist or otherwise) cannot prove, despite any amount of insight/knowledge, that God or a superior power doesn't exist...

Two rules I like (not mine):

1) Thou shalt not alter the consciousness of thy fellow man.

2) Thou shalt not prevent thy fellow man from altering his own consciousness.

After all this...religion = humanism after all??

Why does it need to be accepted? I can accept that you have a right to your views, but I will not accept that I don't have a right to deconstruct or even ridicule the views themselves. All opinions and views are not equally worthy.
