Baile Brigín 2

#1875
Autumn Song
Motorcycle Emptiness
If you tolerate this

Hard to pick. Three very different phases of their output. A very different band now to when they started.

Also part of the 27 club. Jack Lukeman does an amazing Motorcycle Emptiness

La Tristesse Durera

If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next
Ulster League Champions 2009

Cunny Funt

Seen them live for the first time during Forestfest last year, headliners on the Saturday night. Still sounding good.  The mystery on the disappearance of former member Richey Edwards got a mention.

My three

Your love it not enough

You stole the sun from my heart

Doggeral. Sultans were unfunny and tedious. F&W trying too hard to be something they weren't.

Neither would have been heard of in Dublin or Belfast.
Tough audience.

What does the bit above mean ?

They were a straight Madchester ripoff, specificallythe Smiths. Even the fake accent. They weren't terrible, but nothing new or interesting about them. Just listen to James and get a better sound.

I'm a big Smiths fan, if you're saying either of those bands above sound anything like the Smiths, whilst attempting to sound like a culture vulture, you clearly sound like you need your lugs cleaned out. Cemetery Gates cover aside

Actually got to see the Sultans and the Frank and Walters maybe a dozen times each in the Midlands and London during the 90s due to a housemate knowing a couple of them , there's a 1001 bands that could fit your narrative, but definitely 110% not those 2 Cork bands, not even close, both ploughed their own furrow. And both definitely wouldn't have the widespread appeal to be listed in Austy's thread either

3. Shining Light - Ash
2. Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol
1. Teenage Kicks - The Undertones

I'll accept accusations of Norther bias

Shining Light isn't even the best song on Free All Angels. And the best songs on FAA aren't in Ash's top 3.

Still one of the best live bands I've ever seen. They're brilliant.

Shall I add Ash  to  the to-do list?

I didn't say they sound like the Smiths. I said they tried to.

But ultimately my point is about widespread appeal. Cork hasn't produced one commercially successful band, rock, pop or trad. Not one. For a city of that size etc.

JoG2

So they don't sound like the Smiths, but they tried to but ultimately failed? Got ye
