Quote from: toby47 on June 26, 2024, 08:54:41 AMIs our current championship format, the worst format imaginable? Surely the worst in Ireland?

Absolutely, pure shite. Nothing more than meaningless games.

Years ago, the conversation was about burn out and player welfare, now there are more meaningless games than ever. In all grades.

I'm assuming the only benefit is for the county to try and have more opportunities to see players in action.

The whole focus seems to be county with club an afterthought.

Meaningless league again this year with insignificant risk of relegation, all Coleraine must do is beat third place in D2?

Meaningless championship format

No fuss championship draw. Although the graphics are informative that they put up, there was no live draw, no big fuss.

Clearly the person that does Newbridge's PR has come in to help this year and we do see club results and fixtures sometimes on their socials but club coverage is still underwhelming.

If there wasn't a league format to the championship then a large number of our county players would only get one game for their clubs all year. If you want a proper league with all county players available then we'd have to wait until August for it to begin and run it off quickly. There is no perfect system. The Tyrone championship is lauded but they didn't start their league until June which was pathetic for the majority of club players. Also they're going to hit a point where there are 2 games a week for players, Fridays and Sundays. That's terrible for player welfare. What other counties have better systems and what are those arrangements?

I think it's more pathetic for teams to start training in January, for a league to start in March, half of reserve games not fielded, crappy attendances and everyone, players included, knowing they mean absolutely nothing.

Then a group stage championship to start in 4th August. 5 Group games. 4th Aug, 18th Aug, 1st Sep, 15th Sep, 22nd Sep. Madness. 'Championship' starting in 4th August and first KO game on 6th October...9 weeks later.

The league in Derry has become an absolute farce if we are honest. Attendance's are brutal, I have spoken to many players this year scundered at playing the league games. 'such a drawn out long season' is said frequently. Going to the games and meeting ones 'how many men are ya's missing today?' 'Ah were down 8 players today, what about you?' 'Aye were down 10 ourselves'

With all due respect Kilrea & Dungiven are fighting it out for the league, I bet not both of them (possibly none of them) will make it out of their championship group.

I think there's absolutely no doubting Tyrone's club season, both league and championship formats are way above and beyond ours, and the players like it better too. County men will miss a few games, but will get to play well over 50%.

2 Games a week for maybe 2 weeks a year bad for player welfare? I'm not going there!

The question is why players are starting to train in January?

Is there not a split season nowadays?

While I don't disagree with some of what you're saying and I agree we need to look at the structures (personally I'd start the league a bit later, say start of May, have 3/4 games after county players are finished with Derry and then have a back door championship like we had a while back), I think to call the leagues a 'farce' is a bit 'big club' centric. Glen, S'neil, M'felt and maybe a handful of others are the only teams who will be missing 8/10 players, Kilrea, Dungiven, Castledawson, Coleraine, etc... and almost every intermediate and junior club with be at more or less full strength (discounting injuries and usual reasons for missing games like travel or work etc..) during the league campaign, so while I know some intermediate clubs only do enough to survive then look to championship, the leagues to the hundred and hundreds of players in junior, intermediate and some senior teams is far from a farce, for many it's the only opportunity they get to play for their club and they do so each week with pride.

Reserve leagues need looked that tho. Far too many teams at senior and intermediate enter teams each year and hardly ever field. I heard of one senior club conceding a reserve game but on the same night trained with 35 odd men there. Shocking.
Personally I'd run reserves separate on a Wednesday night, do away with the senior intermediate etc...and have one big league, if you enter a team and fail to field more than once then your fined and kicked out for the following year. Then run the championships based on Junior, Int, Senior etc.. again separate on the Monday night following Senior, with one back door chance.

Keyser soze

Automatic £200 fine per match for not fielding reserves.

HiMucker

Is it not that already? I know its a £200 fine for recreational reserves not fielding, so I assume it be the same?

A senior top 12 makes sense. Strengthening the lower leagues. The 1st Division clubs are only thinking of themselves in any other scenario. There be no team 13-16,be anywhere near making a county final, and it rolls more of I just want say our club a senior team. How far are Glenullin of the top of intermediate at the minute? They were maintaining they should been a senior team this year.

Your lads were beat last week by a poor Roscommon team I wouldn't be on here gloating if I were you. Would rather be in Derrys position right now than Tyrone's.

What do we reckon lads are Mickey and Horse gone? I would think so and if Glen don't get out of Ulster I'd hope O'Rourke comes in!

Was no expectations here with such a turnover since winning in 2021 while Derry thought they were All Ireland certainly. 4 championship defeats. Laughing stock.

I really don't think O'Rourke is going to make any difference.

Harte was supposed to bring Derry to the next level. Unfortunately it is a lower level we are playing now and the team and tactics have regressed. Time for a reboot.
