Listen we'll agree that you're right if you promise to leave me alone. I have a feeling you would bore me into submission. I'm in good form rewatching this final please leave me alone mr avid match goer

I'm not on the same sports nut level as you, sweeping statements are just waffle, always like to know who their are aimed at.
Turns out nobody so not overly relevant. 👍🏻👍🏻

quit yo jibbajabba

No it was the other two guys. I've already said. Now please leave me alone mr avid match goer. I've already said you're right with whatever point you're making 🤝

Quote from: Ryan O on July 26, 2026, 05:54:12 PMPaddys a coach and by all accounts he seems to be about as good as there is.
He's not a manager, I'd be surprised if he ever manages again it went that badly for him.

He's was also working with a group of players with overly inflated egos about the level they were operating at.

I never agree with the whole theres a new template to play or win after a trophy is handed out but, Mayo, Dublin, Tyrone, Louth have shown that big shake ups in losing groups and throwing young confident players right into the deep end is a tactic worth trying.

Yeah there is a huge difference between being a coach and a manager. Tally failed twice as a manager- badly. His coaching credentials however are impeccable. I don't know about just throwing young lads in and to be fair the age profile of our team is quite good. Lads like McEvoy, Forbes, Doherty, Sargent, Murray all under 25. Other lads coming into their prime years, McGuigan, Glass, McCluskey, C. Doherty,  McGrogan. Then a sprinkling of more senior heads like Rogers, McKinless and Loughlin.

We just need to click.

Time to move on from a few lads.

I actually think one of our main issues was not playing lads in their best positions. McEvoy is a 3 or 6. He played everywhere but there. Glass is one of the best midfielders in the country but was used in a kind of hybrid role. McGrogan steady in half back line, played most of the year at full back. Rogers an all star midfielder given man marking jobs on nearly everyone.

The management got a lot wrong. With young lads like Forbes, Higgins, Sargeant, Murray and McEvoy surely we can see these boys improve massively in the next year or two. Plenty of class in the team still.

Think Derry be better off trying others In midfield. Cleaned out consistently

Need try D McDermott, C McKeigue, Young Murray, T Rodgers, young Higgins and a few other in the league. Bring bck McWilliams and play him when hes up to fitness, standing out any league game i seen him play, but u can see hes still way of fitness after a long time out. Nearly every team in Div 1 got a skyscraper at Midfield, time to try 1 or 2 of them to see anything there. Chances going up out Div 2 nowhere as strong as last year so i be looking at blooding alot of players.

On the Mayo game, for me it was a case study in belief and bravery. How did that come to pass from a team that no one rated as an all Ireland contenders a year ago.

Every player I heard interviewed talked about Andy Moran's enthusiasm and positivity and how he gave them belief. Do we really think, man for man, they are way ahead of our players? I actually don't. I think a fantastic coaching team got the very best out of a good, rather than great, group of players. They gave players chances based on performance not on reputation and age. That's No. 1 for me.

But secondly, their players repeatedly talked about the fantastic lift they get from their support.

How does that compare with our support? How many games over the past two seasons would our players say that, when things got tough, they got a lift from the crowd? I'd imagine hardly any

Belief doesn't just come from the management and the players themselves. The atmosphere around a team matters too.

Finally, on these "skycrapers" that we arent using that I have heard mentioned here a couple of time since our championship exit. Who are these giants that walk among us that I can't see?

Mayo dont have any skyscapers and beat the teams with the so called skyscapers, Meath, Louth,Cork and Kerry with 4 midfielders players. Didnt see Mayo catch many kickouts but they were so well organised and dying on the breaking ball

Mayo lost their own kickout and the opposition kickout. But they made up for it with intensity and work rate off the ball. It was the template

Was lucky enough to be in Croker yesterday, don't know what 93 was like but I've never experienced anything like it. Moran had the balls to take the shackles off and they just brought the game to them. They didn't panic when it didn't go their way, just fired up and worked the ball forward again. Maybe the underdog tag helped but the confidence in the young players like McDonald and Beirne is something else. On paper I'd say Kerry are the better team but it shows you what the right attitude can do and we don't seem to have it. We need to adapt to the new rules and fast.

I constantly hear that teams aren't supported or that players are getting nothing from the crowd. Supporters will come if they see something the want to get behind. Flat poor football with big men not appearing to give all doesn't inspire people to spend their hard earned cash.

What I agree with is your point on bravery, take all your stats, systems, tactics but when you come up against a team who want it more, put in more effort and prepare to go places the opposition won't thankfully they win.

I even seen a stat floating around on effort/actions, Kerry 78 Mayo 122. You'd love to know how that was measured, absolute nonsense shite to try and stay relevant.

I see your Derry u20 management have been reported as the new Dungannon Clarkes managers. Could very well signify the end of their road there

Interstellar

Maybe Mayo have shown the way for Derry next year. After the Roscommon defeat Andy Moran made the decision to ditch some of the old guard, bringing in the young guys and give them the freedom to just have a go. Others have remarked how glum looking Derry players have looked the last 2 years playing under a restricted game plan. Mayo played with smiles on their faces full of running and energy. It wasn't perfect but it was effective.

Bellaghy and Ballinascreen both got 6ft 5 and 6ft 4 lads playing midfield for them, although they fairly young. Quinn Swatragh (1st yr on the senior team) another big lad who won  alot of kickouts. Derry cant go again with Glass and Rodgers midfield, Brendan likley be in his last year, so a long term replacement needed. D Higgins need alot of game time to get his conditioning up to 70mins, He run out steam about 45mins against Meath. Haran of Dungiven the best underage lad coming through, but they play him in the half forwards and not in the full bck line like the U20 and hes a way better player there in halfforwards from what i seen of him..

Derry Optimist

Any word of Derry management teams for 2027? Was just thinking that we let go, last year, a coach who has now coached three different counties to Senior All Ireland success and is nationally respected as a coach of outstanding ability. Well done Paddy Tally.

Conor Doherty must be an option for midfield under the new rules. Full of running. Athletic. Good in the air. Good 2 point kicker. All the things you need in the modern midfielder.

He'd be the shortest midfielder in Ireland by a distance. It's a pity as I agree he'd otherwise be suited to that role.
