All provincial championships should be done away with as they're utterly pointless, including Ulster.

Colm O'Rourke agrees with you.

So do I.
Used to mean a lot more to meath...

Who the hell are people from other counties to be saying Longford have no business being on the same pitch as Dublin? This is the same county which has knocked Mayo, Derry (several times) and Down out of the champonship in recent years, and run Dublin to two points not so long ago.

If Dublin are doing this to Longford, they'd be be beating those counties I mentioned above by more.

Ah please are u watch this.....

No they wouldn't and that isn't the point anyway.
How have Mayo, Derry and Down fared against Longford in championship football over the last 13 years?

Dublin have already made clean shit of Mayo this year. The League final against Derry last year was as big a farce as this is.

Kildare who are supposedly cannon fodder in Leinster destroyed Down in the championship in Newry last year.

Those who advocate a tiered championship should at least be honest and advocate that it be confined to three teams.

Zulu

I didn't see anybody argue for a tiered championship here. You're point about what Dublin did to Mayo in the league just weakens your argument, Dublin wouldn't do what they're doing here to Mayo, Derry or Down in the championship. I wouldn't argue that Longford can't be in the championship but I would get rid of the provincial championships which are just a waste of time and effort for all. I'd link the league and championship which would provide more 'winnable' meaningful games for all teams, more competitive games for supporters and a proper structure to the season.

Dublin would do what they're doing here to 28 other counties. We're told that Monaghan have All-Ireland ambitions and they suffered exactly the same fate.

Linking the league and championship won't do anything whatsoever for competitveness.

Wildweasel74

Its still up for debate if Dublin will beat either Mayo, Donegal or Kerry this year, they had the same cake walk last year to the hard games, a number of other teams will be within 7-10Pt's of them, cant see any other teams getting beat by 28Pt's Sidney to be honest.

larryin89

Omg why not, what is wrong with a tiered championship? How the fook can you justify that shite ? and the trend that is developing over the last 3/4 years of the top teams in the country developing a bigger gap year on year.

It's just nonsensical the way it is ?Castlebar  Mitchell's v kilmovee shamrocks  can't work cause one is a senior club and the other is junior b . Some people are just hell bent on different agendas , like Spillane there as he knows Kerry are on a good thing with Munster, be a different story in a 16 team open draw .
Walk-in down mchale rd , sun out, summers day , game day . That's all .

Abolishing the provincial championship will help to decrease competitiveness, not increase it.

A tiered championship will do likewise.

Zulu

Nonsense. You keep referring to league games when we all know league games are no comparison to championship. A week after hammering Monaghan in Monaghan Dublin were lucky to beat them in Croke Park. To suggest Longford are on a par with Mayo, Derry, Down and Monaghan is simply daft.

Of course linking the league and championship would would help competitiveness as teams would, in the main, be playing against their peers. As they get better they climb the ladder and face better teams which in turn brings them on. Linking the league to the championship would also make counties take it more seriously so quality would increase and the league would be a more accurate reflection of your standing in the game.

Not a chance would dublin beat monaghan by 27pts in a championship game. Dublin are a top 2 team but there are plenty of sides out there that will compete with or beat this Dublin side. Take your pick from kerry, cork, mayo, monaghan, donegal, tyrone all capable of it.

You're the one comparing league to championship. We all know what happened when Dublin met Monaghan in the championship.

Derry and Down people might think they wouldn't have lost by 20 odd points there today. They've deluded notions of grandeur if they really think that, given that it isn't very long since Longford were making fools of them.

Only 17. Dublin beat Wexford by 23 points in a Leinster final in 2008 and Wexford turned around and beat Down easily and then beat the Ulster Champions Armagh. Ulster people are seriously deluded if they think any team outside Donegal would compete with Dublin.

How any sensible person can type this is astounding. The provincial championships have been around for 130+ years and most counties have only won one or two in that time so I wouldn't think it possible for an alternative system to create less competitiveness.

QuoteYou're the one comparing league to championship. We all know what happened when Dublin met Monaghan in the championship.

Eh? You're the only one to refer to league results as proof of something. I wouldn't expect Derry or Down to beat Dublin but they'd certainly be more competitive to say otherwise is just to ignore reality.
