Why is horse racing referred to simply as "racing"? Cycling, Formula 1 or track and field events don't enjoy the same exclusive use of the word.   Was there no other type of racing when horse racing first became popular?

My favourite charades tv programme is "Channel 4 Racing"

And while I'm at it, my favourite book to give someone in charades is "The Myth of Nancy Drew"

It's probably because its called horse racing and people have shortened it to racing. Shortening to "horse" would probably cause confusion.
