Ever since the people began recording history there have been empires the Mongols, roman, Greek, Turkish, Persian, to name but a few, British french Spanish Portuguese are more recent who do you think will be the next. the yanks? the Chinese?
The Yanks next?? They are the current default imperialist power, things may have changed in that they dont have to march their soilders over every border, but they dont have to.  They are as omnipotent as the British Empire ever was.

Economically China (India and possibly Brazil) are the upcoming Economic threats to US dominance, again they mightn't march their soilders over too many borders but they will be 'imperialist' in nature - Having said that it wouldn't take much for the Chinese to want to 'regain' Taiwan, they historically dont like Koreans or the Japanese, so if there was to be another physical empire builder China could be your man.  India might fancy reclaiming Pakistan and Bangladesh at some point too, you never know!  The Banana republic nature of South America could mean a lot countries falling very easily to an economic powerhouse in Brazil as well.

mostly agree benny, but brazil? dont know if they have ever been in a war

I meant that they are one of the next possible Economic powerhouses, and that this has a tendency to translate into increases in military power.

Dont know much about Brazil militarily myself, had quick shifty at Wikipedia and they've been involved in a fair few skirmishes and also contributed troops in WW1 & 2.

Plenty of politicians in the USA already talk about "our empire". It's not only tinfoil hat-looney's like Corr, Jones and the rest.

When you look at all the military bases that are bases around the world its hard to argue with that. Or listen when US politicians or commentators talk about a foreign country not having America's interests at heart. Like Venezuela since they elected Chavez, As if any country should even consider America particularly considering national resources. There are also all the foreign policy documents that are focussed on accessing other nations natural resources.

Generally governments like our own and the British will bow to American demands often against the democratic voice of the people. ie the use of Shannon.

But overall its a rather benign empire compared to those of the previous 3 centuries. The territory it gains is more in cultural and financial influence than land in most cases.

But the scales are tipping towards the East now and to China in particular. The oil resources and how they are divided up over the next 10-20 years might have a big say in how strong China gets. WIth the way the availability and price of oil is going at the moment, they say that for 1000 people to get on the road in China or India, 1000 people in the "West" need to come off the road. Thats according to Jeff Rubin. Look him up.

If all the major countries stop using the dollar as the international trade currency the USA will take a big nose dive and could happen within the next few months so they say. Might be hysteria though.
