Derry county board issued a statement on Friday afternoon breaking the news and they thanked Cassidy for his efforts over the last 24-months.

"Damian and his management team have served this county with pride over the past two years, highlighted by leading our County to a National final in Croke Park in 2009," said the Derry county board.

"Derry County Board would like to commend Damian and his management team for the new initiatives they have introduced to the county set up and credit them for the new players they have introduced to the panel.

"Whilst we regret to be in this situation, we accept the decision of Damian and his management team, and wish them well in their future endeavours, and have no doubt they will go on to enjoy continued success in their future managerial careers."

Cassidy proved his quality with Clonoe. With Derry it was a case of a silk purse can not be made from a sows ear. It is a poison chalice.

EC,

I dont think he proved that much with Clonoe at all. They won the championship in a year that it was played very late due to County commitments. If Tyrone had been out early that year then I dont think they would have been anywhere near a county final. It fell perfectly for them with no county men away training.

Knock Yer Mucker In

So Oakleaf whats you rclubs excuse for not winning the championship. We played Errigal before the Ulster championship started and your trying to say that Dromores failure was due to not having their county men at training, so how did Dromore win it last year. Away and show some respect to our Club. Cassidys better rid of you lot.

KYMI,

Errigal have been going through a period of rebuilding for the last while and will emerge as a serious team over the next couple of years. The Errigal team Clonoe beat that year by Errigal teams standards would have been middling imo. Compare the underfoot and weather conditions from when you won it and the conditions last year. You where also aided by Dromore being managed by a nut job.

The records will show that Clonoe won the O'Neill cup, at the end of the day thats all that really matters. No one will remember that they came through the handy side of the draw and where helped by the championship being run off in a month.

They beat Errigal, Carrickmore and Dromore on the way to a county title. That is not the Handy way I can tell you.

Did Cassidy give any reason for not continuing?

Surely it is because he knows the Cavan position has become available??
