I don't think any team has lost its first match and gone on to win the World Cup.  I seem to remember Holland won Euro 88 after losing their opener but I don't think its happened at the WC.

Argentina lost their first at Italia 90 and got to the final. I think it was 2 pts for a win then, not sure.

In 1982 Italy drew all their group games (two 1-1 and one 0-0) and qualified due to the fact that they scored more goals (2) than Cameroon (1).  They woke up in the 2nd stage...

And that is why I am growing to hate soccer.

"There was contact" = penalty and sending off and game over and country out of world cup.

"No handball" = goal and country out of world cup.

No TV ref = diving cheats win = what soccer is all about now.

However if someone tries to cheat their sponsors they act quickly enough to correct the problem.

A load of Dutch girls, who wore orange dresses as a stunt by Bavarian beer, were arrested and had their passports taken by South African police. This was demanded by World Cup organisers on behalf of their main beer sponsor, Budweiser.
