Quote from: SaffronSports on May 25, 2026, 11:23:40 PMSheedy presumably as he did some work with us before. Neil also sounded a bit odd to me. Was obviously with this current ticket last year but yeah if hes interested in coaching over media you'd prefer him to have more experience first.

I'd have no issue with Gregory or Johnny getting the job, both loads of experience but i think Mickey McShane probably the front runner atm due to being u20 manager this past two years. He seems the obvious one to me but could be someone else altogether.

Maybe a Greg and Johnny double team. Keep everybody happy.

Not a great U20 run in Leinster for Micky. Had a good group of players. But Leinster 2 is hard, never mind the top tier in Leinster.

Gleeson, in hindsight, done some job with Antrim. In a quiet understated way also.

Someone earlier mentioned that they didn't think Wee Mickey was tactically aware and that's a subjective opinion, but what I do know is that when Slaughtneil met Dunloy in Newry, Slaughtneil had the much better gameplan and Greg hadn't got a response to what Slaughtneil did that day.

Was Gregg also part of that huge U20 management panel? I think I saw a picture of them and it was near on a dozen lads there, unless there were physios etc in the photo.

what Antrim need to do is go internal. Back the one man to take it on and not go putting together these combos to suit various agendas.

It almost never works unless the lads have a good working relationship prior to going into these roles.

Spot on here JC and I think that could be the issue with the u20 ticket at the moment, 2 rarely goes into one especially when both see themselves as the main man.

And yeah the back room team on the u20s was close to 15  ;D  ;D  ;D  to be beaten by Meath.

Agree that it would be preferable to have a local man in charge for a few years and see if we can get our house in order and become competitive again.

Na Glinntí Glasa

Decent game between ourselves and the town last night. Ballycastle hit serious wides in the first half whenever they were on top which only gave them a 1 point lead going into half time.

Second half Dunloy upped the pace and started to pull away as the game wore on.

Nice to see one of the county lads back on the pitch again for ourselves. Keelan looked very sharp when he was introduced.

Davy gets his platform to air his views.

Fair play to him in naming names, if he was going to come out and blame the county board (rightly or wrongly) he may as well name the people he had grievances with.

Sure we knew it was never going to be Davy's fault anyway.

I wonder what that was all about?

By the chat of that article, he'll not be out of a job too long.

Very impressed with Portaferry yesterday. Some really good players in their panel esp Cathal Coleman.

The man didnt miss a thing all game, a very good free taker.

Good to see Coby play for the last 20 mins of the game where he managed to score 0-06.

The split games now coming up where we have one away (Loughgiel) and then three at home (St Johns, Cushendall & Ballycastle).

Was he not a stand out performer in Ulster club last year?

Interesting at the bottom. The Down teams will improve but Glenariffe have gave themselves a real chance in staying up now. Would be a shame to see St Endas drop given the 3 players they've had missing. Do we even need relegation?

I would imagine that the only team interested in going up and capable of holding their own might be Ballycran. Can't imagine any of the real intermediate clubs in Antrim are anywhere near that.

Both St endas and glenariffe are capable of competing in Div 1 and they will provide a fair few players to the Antrim u20 and senior panels in next few years so I would be all on for giving those clubs a bit of breathing space / latitude to develop, rather than having relegation hanging over them.  Seems to me it would be for the better of Antrim hurling.

If that means 11 teams in Div 1 next year then so be it .

NorthAntrimSaff

Breathing space needed 100%. Similar to IC season and Kildare this year. Signs of progression then relegated before they can adapt

Antrim Football leagues are a clear warning to how that can go wrong. 16 teams in there and shouldn't be more than half that tbh.

Why would the single code clubs especially not want more games? The match to training ratio for a club player in those clubs must be ridiculous.

I'm talking 11 teams, not 16.  Play 10 games and then split, gives 16 league games max.

Deerstalker

You can't be blocking teams from coming up, Ballycran will 100% want to come back up.

It's the same as the Kildare argument, they lost every game in Leinster - they won't walk the Joe McDonagh next year in my opinion.

You can't block a Joe McDonagh winner coming up to keep Kildare in Leinster.

The point is ballsing about when certain clubs didn't fancy a relegation, is what created that situation in football. If you finish bottom of your league, you deserve to go down.

Is that a one way league?

16 teams equals 15 games and finding 15 slots to play them is a challenge enough.

I think the Div1 hurling is right, there needs to be jeopardy, there needs to be something to play for, there needs to be relegation, there needs to be a reason to avoid the bottom 5.

We have 9 first round games, then another 4 after the split, so that's 13 games all in. Nothing wrong with that, especially when most of the first 9 are without county players.

The issue is that teams like St Endas, Glenariffe etc won't have deep squads and if they have 3/4 lads each on county squads they will suffer and inevitably those lads will come under pressure to leave the county squad to help avoid relegation.

I would prefer the position around lads not being allowed to play for their clubs is revisited but it feels like that is generally accepted nowadays.  Certainly the number that county squads are holding back is way over the top in my view .
