Hogan Stand to be blamed there, handy all the same that they have all the teams
Mayo for Sam! Just don't ask me for a year

Do ye boys think there is any point in this competition these days especially since the Colleges teams came in and have first choice on players?
There is no comparison between the County team selections in the FBD and those who play in the Championship making me question what this competition achieves.
Then there's the chance of 2 College teams in the Final with subsequent lack of any Revenue accruing to Comhairle Chonnacht.

Ah its a pre-season tourno that gives managers a chance to run the rule over a few younger lads, try out a few things in terms of players in new positions before the league starts. A lot of experimentation might happen in the league too but its handy have a head start in the FBD. Winning it is very much secondary

That's true RedandGreen but wouldnt it be handy for the managers to have the younger lads i.e. the students available to play for the team that they will be playing for in the summer?  It's hard to watch them when they are playing at a different venue, also they may be playing out of position for their college.  I'm sure the colleges are using this compition as preperation for the Sigerson or Trench Cups.

neilthemac

imho they'd be better doing training with the lads not in college? rather than games

4-5 weeks of good hard work with no distractions of matches or anything before the NFL

RedandGreenSniper

I don't think the games are that distractin. Mayo are training on Saturdays nonetheless, FBD is a handy run out for some players, a chance to rest others and, above all, a chance to throw new lads in to see how they fare out

I think the college teams are useful in that they give counties matches against teams they might not normally play and while the FBD sees a lot of lads goin thru the motions, it would be even more so the case if it was just the same five counties playing against each other all the time.

Any of the Mayo lads going to Ballinode for the IT Sligo match on Sunday. Might take a spin up - is it right beside the IT itself?

It used to be a great competition when they played it first, coming as it did between the Christmas break following the first few rounds of the league and before the league recommenced in the spring. Produced great, competitive ententertaining contests & imo was at least partly responsible for the general revival in Connacht football from the mid 90's onwards. There was no colleges involvement in those early days.

Don't really have too much regard for the current competition structure, tbh. Given the collective training ban, surely a manager should be able to call on his preferred county panel in preparation for the league, as a minimum? As jaykay said, it seems the FBD is more geared towards preparing the colleges sides for their competitions than any other meaningful purpose these days. It's all a bit aimless in what purpose it serves now, imo.

A competitive Ros v Mayo match could never be described as going through the motions ...  :D  ;)

Unfortunately it's been a while since we gave them a competitive game but hopefully normal service will be resumed on 18th. :)

Yep, right beside it, opposite the hospital. Head through town Bundoran-bound, but turn for Manorhamilton, you'll see it there on the left.

Actually while I'm not a great fan of the FBD or similiar competitions, yet still go to a few of the games, one thing that annoys me is that the groups haven't changed in yonks. We play Galway, Leitrim and GMIT every bloody year. Why can't they mix it up every year or two years even, wouldn't mind seeing Sligo up against the IT, wouldn't be the longest journey for an away game, rather than Dunmore, Menlough, Tuam or whatever Galway venue we find ourselves in every year.
