When did movies become "shows?"
When did films become movies?
A few years before they became "talkies".

Anyhow, whatever happened to "the pictures"?
"If you come in here again, you'd better bring guns"
"We don't need guns"
"Yes you fuckin' do"

This show is embarrassingly poor.  All it needs is a couple of leprechauns to cap off the dewey-eyed romanticism.

Main Street

You have to consider it was an outsider's view of a story which covered events in the most controversial episode of Irish history, where for the first time there was a sustained rebellion with a popular mandate that finally got within reach before splitting - violently.
I think Loach & writer managed to give the story a great deal more respect than the Michael Collin's farce.
Some people think it was sympathetic to anti-treaty side, I don't.
We got a story about how resistance was divided and stripped entirely of any program for social justice.

It's a load of overplayed, cliche ridden bollocks.

clarshack

didnt really enjoy it tbh. michael collins was much better.

I enjoyed it and I enjoyed Michael Collins as films. They're not supposed to be historical documentaries.

I'd like to see HBO doing a show about the tan wars.  That would be epic.

In fairness to the Collins film Liam Neeson did a fine job in playing the big fella. The depiction of the squad etc was pretty realistic. But Julia Roberts as Kitty Kiernan was terrible ..... along with her Begorrah accent. Jordan messed around with the historical facts neddlessly I thought.... having Ned Broy killed.... the croke park massacre.... Harry Boland's death etc.

Ya Broys killing was stupid. The Croke Park Massacre was done that way because doing it the real way would have lost its effect as it was a long drawn out process and he was trying to fit it into a few minute long slot. Julia Roberts was woefull. Neeson did a great job of Collins and Dev sounded like the slimey snake I always imagined him to be  ;)
Time to take a more chill-pill approach to life.

I know you're joking there in reference to your own politics but the way Dev was depicted was another issue I had with the movie. I'm no fan of the Long Fella either but Jordan painted him as a pure pantomine villian. Also implied he was near Beal na blath for Collin's killing and partly involved in it which was no way true. Dev helped start the civil war but he was'nt really a major military figure on the republican side during it. I take your point about the Croker massacre but having the player bounce the ball over the tank etc was belittling what really happened I feel. I think he had Broy killed to merge the murder in Dublin castle of Peader Clancy & Dick McKee. They were key men of Collin's. I agree with you that Neeson did a great job on Collins but I think there was an opportunity lost to make a great movie about a truly fascinating historical figure.
